British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Overview

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) has long established itself as a major international financial centre. As well as being a leading offshore jurisdiction for the registration of investment funds, captive insurance companies and structured finance issuers, BVI incorporated companies are frequently used for joint ventures and as holding companies in complex international group structures to hold high value assets and businesses.

BVI entities are widely used in many emerging markets, most notably the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) and several countries in Latin America, along with more established markets such as the U.S. and Europe.

Critical issues often encountered by BVI entities include:

  • Stakeholder disputes
  • Allegations of fraud or other financial misconduct
  • Litigation or arbitration proceedings
  • Insolvency or liquidity pressure
  • Enforcement of debt or security
