John Franklin is a managing director in the Strategic Communications practice at FTI Consulting and is based in San Francisco. He serves as Head of the Telecom, Media & Technology (TMT) industry practice in North America within the Strategic Communications segment.
Mr. Franklin has more than 20 years of reputation management, brand building, financial communications and crisis management experience helping organizations protect and build enterprise value before, during and after complex transitions. He advises mature public companies with iconic global brands as well as private and newly-public corporations.
Mr. Franklin’s engagements are primarily technology driven and have included clients in the consumer and B2B internet, software and hardware sectors. He has also worked across a broad array of other industries, from consumer packaged goods, to automotive, financial services, airlines, aerospace, media, insurance, retail, publishing and pharmaceuticals.
Mr. Franklin counsels organizations on defining enterprise identity; stakeholder engagement; crisis management and recovery; regulatory investigations; litigation; refinancing; government testimony; succession planning; shareholder activism ; and shifts in regulation and policy. He also has worked on a wide variety of transaction and liquidity events, including early and late private funding, IPOs, mergers & acquisitions, spin-offs, restructurings and supporting as well as defending hostile bids.
Mr. Franklin’s technology & telecommunications clients have included Dell, HP, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Nextel (currently Sprint), Trulia, Zynga, Eventbrite, Recommind and Gigamon. Assignments outside the TMTindustry have included Boeing, Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, Northwest Airlines (currently Delta Air Lines), PepsiCo, and Toyota.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Franklin was a managing director at the Abernathy MacGregor Group, for whom he helped open and build the San Francisco office focused on balancing emerging growth companies with Fortune 100 clients. He also spent nearly a decade at RLM Finsbury (then operating as Robinson, Lerer & Montgomery) focusing on crisis, transaction and investor relations engagements. Mr. Franklin has also served as Chief Marketing Officer for Catalyst Group Design, where he focused on online communications strategies related to user-interface design, usability testing, blogging and search-engine optimization.
Mr. Franklin has a B.A. from Princeton University, where he majored in English and its European Backgrounds (French) and received special acknowledgement for his independent academic work.
