IT Disaster Recovery Planning (DR)

FTI Consulting Disaster Recovery professionals have extensive consulting and client-side experience in the IT environment. We work with CTOs and CIOs to inventory the applications operating in their IT environment and in the cloud. We conduct current state and gap analyses of the recovery environment, and develop DR plans both as stand-alone work product or integrated with the organization’s functional recovery priorities documented in the business impact analysis and the business continuity plan. Because we are both certified business continuity and IT professionals, we look at the DR planning process holistically, starting from the recovery requirements of the business, to drive the disaster recovery priorities and plan.

Current State Analysis

Assessing the organization’s current state of IT recovery capacity is the essential first step in the DR planning process. This analysis uses various data collection processes – interviews with key IT leaders (communication technology, enterprise applications, information security, IT infrastructure and operations, desktop and specialty applications, user support and engagement), on-site data center tours, inspection of infrastructure components, and the collection of hardware, software inventories and current administration/management control points such as firewalls, servers, and software installers.

Disaster Recovery Gap Analysis

The “gaps” we document represent the difference between the capacity of the IT department to recover its technical environment on the one hand, and the requirements of the “business process owners” in the company, government agency or educational institution for recovery, on the other. The gap can develop because no business recovery priorities were ever documented in a business impact analysis, because budget pressure kept IT spending down, or because the organizational culture never supported a unified BCP/DR process. A good business continuity plan clearly indicates linkages between essential processes and functions and the IT resources required for threshold operation and post-disruption recovery.
