May Bennett is a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in Brentwood, TN. She leads the Labor and Process Innovation Service Line within the Health Solutions practice. Ms. Bennett has 30 years of experience in healthcare leadership and has worked in a variety of settings from large teaching hospitals to small physician-owned specialty hospitals, safety net providers and post-acute care. Her expertise includes operations improvement, productivity, strategic planning, compliance, administrative restructuring and aligning incentives of physicians and hospitals.
During her tenure with FTI, she has managed many performance improvement projects, with a focus on enhancing labor management, productivity and organizational design across a variety of enterprises, including community hospitals, multi-hospital health systems, corporate and shared services, academic medical centers and highly unionized environments. Typical projects result in labor expense improvement of 3-8%.
Ms. Bennett’s healthcare career includes a background in laboratory and ancillary operations; hospital operations and service line development; out-patient business development, such as reference labs, retail pharmacy and joint ventures; innovations in patient-centered care and development of the continuum of care. Her hospital operations experience includes senior management positions in a 541-bed university affiliated teaching hospital, divisional leadership for a start-up division of specialty hospitals and chief operating office for a diverse post-acute campus.
During her career in hospital operations, Ms. Bennett was responsible for the development of a successful joint venture cardiac catheterization lab with investor cardiologists. She led the initial Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations accreditation for a network of more than 80 physician practices. She also served as executive leader for a $40 million improvement plan encompassing productivity improvements, service realignment and restructuring physician relationships.
In a subsequent operations role, Ms. Bennett provided leadership for a multi-year turnaround of a long-term care community, providing multiple levels of care from adult day care and assisted living to long term acute care. She has also served as an adjunct faculty member in the Massey School of Business at Belmont University.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Ms. Bennett held the role of Chief Operating Officer of the hospital division of Diversified Specialty Institutes. Previously, she was employed by Vanderbilt Medical Center as Chief Operating Officer for the senior care campus of the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority. Ms. Bennett also served as compliance officer for the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority and senior vice president of operations at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Ms. Bennett holds an M.A. in accounting from Belmont University in Tennessee, an M.A. in allied health education from Central Michigan University and a B.S. in medical technology from Middle Tennessee State University. She is a certified medical technologist and certified public accountant. She is a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants.
