Paul Marriott is Chairman of Asia for the Strategic Communications segment of FTI Consulting and is based in Hong Kong. He took on the role in 2016, having co-led the global financial services practice from London for 10 years.

Mr. Marriott’s expertise extends to transaction and crisis communications, media and investor relations and government and regulatory engagement. He has worked extensively across both developed and emerging markets, notably for companies raising capital or acquiring assets internationally.

Mr. Marriott joined FTI Consulting from Reuters where he was a journalist covering equities in London following a posting as energy correspondent in Sydney, Australia. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant (PwC) and spent six years working in equity capital markets for BNP Paribas in London and Tokyo, latterly as Head of Equity Capital Markets for Japan and Korea. He speaks fluent French and Japanese.

Recent experience:

  • Advising HSBC Holdings on a range of communications challenges over the last 10 years including the leak of Swiss Private Bank data, the 2015-16 review of its headquarters location, the successful defence against activist investor KVAM, the creation of the HSBC Emerging Market Index and a range of reputational and regulatory challenges.
  • Standard Bank Group on the reset of its Africa-focused strategy, the agreement of the first UK deferred prosecution agreement with the Serious Fraud Office, the sale of its Global Markets business to ICBC of China and the launch of its brand in multiple overseas markets.
  • Zurich Insurance Group on both financial and corporate communications in European and Asian markets, management transitions, cross-border acquisitions and exceptional losses from large insurance claims.
  • Sberbank of Russia on its privatisation via a £5 billion London share listing, the acquisitions of Denizbank, Volksbank and Troika Dialog as well as the impacts of the Russian financial crisis.
  • ICICI of India over the last 10 years on international debt and equity investor relations, the impact of the banking and emerging markets currency crises, CEO profiling in international media, product launches in the UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Canada and management engagement at the International Monetary Fund and World Economic Forum meetings.
  • National Australia Bank on the demerger of its UK operations and the subsequent successful listing of Clydesdale Yorkshire Banking Group on the London Stock Exchange.
  • Nomura on communicating executive changes, the challenging integration of Lehman’s European and Asian assets and regulatory matters in the UK and U.S.
  • Brit on its £1.22 billion acquisition by Fairfax Financial Holdings of Canada and Amlin on its £3.5 billion acquisition by Japan’s Mitsui Sumitomo.
  • Retained corporate communications adviser to Australia’s Westpac in Asian markets and to Macquarie in EMEA.
  • Advising the Governments of Greece, Iceland, Hungary and Cyprus on the European sovereign debt crisis 2009-2015.
