Anne MacGregor

Anne MacGregor is a Managing Director in the Strategic Communications segment at FTI Consulting and is based in Brussels. She heads the competition team within the Legal Services practice. Anne has extensive know-how in developing and executing political communications strategies and campaigns, specifically on European competition, trade and regulatory matters.

Anne develops and implements advocacy strategies around merger control and other regulatory clearance processes associated with global transactions, for both parties doing deals as well as interested third parties. She also assists companies involved in abuse of dominance, cartel and other antitrust investigations before the European Commission and other competition regulators.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Anne practiced competition and trade law in the Brussels and Washington, D.C. offices of several international law firms for 25 years. She stepped out of law practice for two stints as a specialist antitrust journalist, establishing the merger control reporting team at MLex and later launching and leading the Brussels Bureau of the Washington, D.C.-based antitrust investigatory news service The Capitol Forum.

Having experienced the EU competition scene from a journalist’s point of view and having provided antitrust legal advice to multinationals for over two decades, during which time she often worked alongside FTI Consulting, Anne recently joined the firm to strengthen its legal services strategic communications capability.

Anne’s career highlights include acting for Monsanto in a legal/public affairs role liaising with media and other stakeholders during the EC’s merger control review of its acquisition by Bayer; assisting the Mexican government in negotiating its free trade agreement with the EU in the late 1990s; acting in more than 35 EU Merger Regulation cases; convincing Icelandic authorities to respect EEA free movement of goods obligations and allow the sale of M&Ms in Iceland; overturning EU anti-dumping duties on canned mandarins in the EU General Court in Luxembourg on behalf a Chinese producer; drafting a new South African pet food regulations to dovetail with EU legislation and help streamline trade under the South Africa/EU free trade agreement, and working with CEEC accession countries prior to 2004 to bring their feeding stuffs and food laws into line with EU legislation.

Anne was ranked in the 2018 Chambers & Partners Global Guide with clients appreciating her "superb attention to detail and fine awareness of the economic and political implications of any deal". She was described in an earlier guide as "perceptive, incisive and politically astute”. In 2016 she was featured in the fifth edition of Global Competition Review's Women in Antitrust.

Anne is quoted regularly in print and has done numerous TV and radio interviews on trade and competition issues on the BBC, EuroNews and other broadcasters. She holds an LL.M. from Hamburg University, as well an LL.B. (Hons) from the Australian National University and a B.A. in German and History from the same university. She is a qualified lawyer in Australia, England & Wales, New York and Ireland.
