About Bill
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. McCausland served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for over 25 years. His final assignment with the FBI was as the Chief of Counterespionage for the Central Intelligence Agency, leading efforts to identify and neutralize penetrations of the U.S. intelligence community by hostile intelligence services, non-state entities, and insider threats.
From 2017 until 2019, Mr. McCausland was the Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Office of the Special Counsel, directing the FBI team investigating potential criminal activity by individuals associated with the Trump campaign. Prior to that, he served as ASAC of the FBI’s criminal branch in Connecticut, overseeing investigations into public corruption, financial schemes, violent crime, and cyber matters.
Mr. McCausland has extensive overseas experience. From 2011 to 2013, he represented the FBI in a joint organized crime task force in the Czech Republic where, in close partnership with Europol, he disrupted and dismantled multiple transnational criminal organizations. From 2006 to 2011, Mr. McCausland was the FBI’s representative in Budapest, Hungary. During his time there, he assisted in the creation of the country’s counter-terrorism service (TEK), negotiated data privacy issues with the European Union, and testified in the German trial of a Eurasian organized crime group. Mr. McCausland successfully led efforts in Hungary and Macedonia to secure a $64 million judgment against an international telecom corporation for FCPA violations. He assisted in the identification and arrest of domestic extremists responsible for a spree of murder and arson targeting Hungary’s Roma community.
Domestically, Mr. McCausland directed a joint U.S.-Italy investigation into sports bribery in the figure skating events at the 2002 Winter Olympics. He led the FBI’s efforts to mitigate threats posed by oligarch-controlled strategic assets through criminal prosecutions, administrative measures (to include OFAC designations), and engagement with foreign partners and U.S. financial institutions. Mr. McCausland was the lead investigator on the first-ever prosecution of a Eurasian mafia organization under federal RICO statutes. Mr. McCausland was a first responder to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Mr. McCausland practiced law in the State of Florida prior to joining the FBI. He holds a B.A. in Government and Law from Lafayette College and a J.D. from Vermont Law School.
