Drawing on the expertise of our UK, European and US energy teams, FTI-CL Energy has examined current international transmission planning practice across several jurisdictions in Europe and the US, and assessed potential options for a future model of transmission planning for Australia’s National Energy Market.
This is a second report produced by a global FTI-CL Energy team on issues related to electricity transmission in Australia’s National Electricity Market (the electricity wholesale market for the eastern and southern states of Australia, or “NEM”).
Building on our previous analysis of how different jurisdictions consider the case for investment in electricity transmission networks, the Australian Energy Market Operator has commissioned FTI-CL Energy to examine, in a wider-reaching report, the current international transmission planning practice – ranging from scenario development, identification of system needs, selecting solutions and funding the delivery of transmission solutions.
Our report assessed potential options for a future model of transmission planning for NEM by comparing two overarching transmission planning models: a “US ISO model” and a “European model”. Our report found that given the parallels between the NEM and US ISO model, some of the features of the US ISO model could be considered further for potential implementation in the NEM framework.”
