Shayla C. Higginbotham has led adult and pediatric hospital and ambulatory care operations for more than ten years, working directly with Board Members, C-Suite executives, physicians, and clinical and non-clinical teams.
Shayla joined FTI Consulting after consulting within the Big 4 and serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for a public Women’s and Children’s Hospital. She has consulted domestically on large-scale performance improvement healthcare engagements and internationally in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the development of an academic health sciences system and a residential health and wellness 5-star resort. Her in-depth hospital operations knowledge is accented with detailed project management training.
Shayla’s career has included not only consulting practice, but also hospital and ambulatory care leadership. As a consultative leader within strategic and operational transformation, she has led a Nursing and Emergency Department team to identify a $55M savings opportunity across a 5-hospital platform. Her Project Management Office (PMO) leadership extends both inside and outside of the healthcare industry, including a recent engagement at the top commercial beverage company for General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance implementation. Her largest multi-hospital PMO engagement included 60 consultants across 10 clinical and non-clinical work streams with a $40M performance improvement objective across a 3-hospital system. She led that team to exceed the initial target and achieve a $52M total savings opportunity.
Shayla has diversified her hospital leadership opportunities by serving within a public health trust (PHT) and an academic medical center (AMC). While serving as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a public Women’s and Children’s Hospital, she led clinical and non-clinical, inpatient and outpatient departments, including a 126-bed NICU, Environmental Services, Plant Operations, Pharmacy, Imaging, and the Multi-Specialty Practices. While serving as a senior executive for a large academic medical university’s Heart Center, she led adult and pediatric cardiovascular service line operations and business development for the Heart Center’s 10 procedural departments. With her passion for construction and renovation, she successfully led the Heart Center’s 14-member electrophysiology practice through a hospital-based clinic conversion, a $12M EP Lab bi-plane installation, and a $2M Cardiac MRI replacement.
Shayla has also served in several community-based healthcare institutions, where her desire for project management leadership was originated. One of her most challenging renovation engagements included a 175-bed, $33M multi-phased hospital renovation that expanded an Intensive Care Unit with VISICU technology. During this multi-year engagement, she continued to provide operational, financial, staffing and marketing direction for an 8-bed Sleep Disorders Center and the Bariatric Surgery Program, which respectively were approved for a 5-year reaccreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a Center of Excellence designation from the Surgical Review Corporation.
Overall, Shayla is an extremely dedicated and results-focused performance improvement consultant and previous c-suite administrator with experience leading change to achieve operational and efficiency targets within an organization’s pillar or balanced scorecard system. She possesses proven ability to lead multiple projects and motivate departmental and ancillary teams. Her strong communication and relationship development skills aid in establishing a smooth transition from the initiate phase to close phase for her engagements.
