Garrett O’Connor is a Managing Director in the Business Transformation practice. He has over 20 years of consulting and industry experience, including post-acquisition integration, carve-out, due diligence, business planning and profit and loss management. Garrett has extensive experience across a range of industries, including retail and consumer products, construction, telecom, transportation and the public sector.
Garrett’s merger integration experience includes leading the integration of a £200 million UK chocolate manufacturer and retailer by a €10 billion global confectionery business by identifying synergies, including a range review, cost savings in SG&A, supply chain and procurement and then driving a structured program to deliver benefits. His carve-out experience includes the European carve-out of a specialty pharmaceutical division from a £12 billion consumer products business by helping management define the future operating model of the business, including sales operations across 48 countries, and leading the successful separation from the parent company.
Garrett also led the successful integration of a UK and Nordics airline, which encompassed all business functions from fleet planning to operations. Additionally, Garrett advised a new entrant to the UK rail market on their acquisition of a train operating company operating a rail franchise, including post-acquisition integration. He also led the post-acquisition integration of the finance function for a $2.5 billion European business, which re-engineered and in-sourced finance services, implementing common processes and shared service centers, and transformed IT systems.
In regards to performance improvement, Garrett generated value from strategic initiatives for a €700m European snacks and drinks vending business by working with the CEO and executive team to prioritize and generate more value from strategic initiatives. He has led several cost reduction and operational restructuring programs, including when he led a rapid cost reduction and operational restructuring program within a £250 million turnover joint venture, improving operating margins by 6%. Additionally, he led an operational review of a UK leisure business, identifying cost reduction and revenue growth opportunities to improve EBITDA by circa 15%.
In regards to due diligence, Garrett undertook operational due diligence on a £1 billion UK infrastructure services business operating in both public and private sectors, where he assessed the viability of the organisation's cost base and forecast profit improvement and restructuring programs. He also performed operational due diligence for the €7.5 billion acquisition of a listed global consumer products business by a private equity fund.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Garrett was a Director at EY. Prior to EY, Garrett had full profit and loss and budgetary responsibility for telent's wireless telecommunications services business in the UK and Ireland.
Garrett holds a B.Sc. in Physics and M.Sc. in Engineering from Imperial College, London University and an M.B.A. from Henley Management College.
