Jim Butler is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in Brentwood, TN. He is part of the Health Solutions segment. Mr. Butler has built his 29-year healthcare career in operations and business development, initiating solutions for a variety of healthcare and managed care organizations. Healthcare operates at a constant rate change, requiring organizations to optimize care delivery and adapt to value-based care initiatives. Mr. Butler’s financial, change management and operational expertise will aid clients in navigating these shifts and addressing key performance and alignment drivers.

Mr. Butler’s accomplishments include: over 100+ physician practice acquisitions, including in-depth due diligence assessments, strategic market expansion, joint venture arraignments, and MSO joint venture medical group structures. He has developed over 25+ service line integration arrangements under co-management, bundled payment, gain sharing and PSA. The results of these arrangements have yielded a reduction in cost of care variation, length of stay variance, readmission rates, value-based care penalties, and improved physician accountability and ownership.

Mr. Butler developed an in-depth Value-Based Care readiness assessment tool to evaluate and assist progressive health systems to understand their current operational, clinical and financial constraints impacting their ability to succeed under risk based platforms. Completed Clinical Integration (CI) Network Assessment & Implementation, and Hospital Efficiency Improvement Program (HEIP) arrangements.

He also specializes in Physician Enterprise Optimization, completing structured, in-depth operational and financial assessments of medical group and service line performance, including: revenue cycle, workforce analysis, patient access and provider compensation model alignment. Optimization of the care delivery model and assessing and defining the APP utilization and care transformation to support PCMH care model and improve patient access to attain market growth. He also designed a clinical workforce level of care demand match analysis to best align staffing ratios to utilization, and align the right care at the right level.

He also developed Physician Enterprise Compensation Models, including net income, wRVU incentive based, patient panel compensation models, PSA/MSA, block lease and value-based incentive metrics in support of risk/MACRA arrangements.

Mr. Butler previously worked for The Advisory Board Company where he served as Vice President, Consulting and Management Division, led several complex physician-hospital alignment arrangements, service line development and optimization projects.

Prior to joining the Advisory Board, Mr. Butler served as Regional Executive Director for Community Health Network’s 400+ employed physician enterprise, Community Physicians of Indiana (“CPI”). Before joining CPI, Mr. Butler was the principal architect and CEO of North Medical Community Health Plan Inc., a startup New York State HMO and Physician Management Services Company.
