Juan Velez is a Senior Director in the Turnaround & Restructuring practice, specializing in national and international arbitration, mergers and acquisitions, restructuring, valuation and project finance. He has more than 20 years of experience in finance management, investment banking, enterprise strategy and business development. Mr. Velez has industry experience in oil and gas, infrastructure, telecommunications, retail and consumer products, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, governments, steel manufacturers, ports, transportation, utilities and financial institutions.
Mr. Velez is an economist, with specialization in finance, and has conducted specific studies in infrastructure’s funding and investment, risk management and funding for development, mergers, acquisitions and integration strategies, complex transactions negotiations, courses lectured by recognized professors from Stern School of Business, Darden School of Business, Universidad Bocconi and the World Bank.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Velez was a Partner of True Value Consulting, a business consulting firm, where he reorganized the financial department for different companies in the food, engineering, and services industries; conducted financial diagnoses of holdings and private capital funds; performed the debt restructuring and supported processes of insolvency; prepared and submitted expert witness reports for arbitration and ordinary justice processes, and structured projects in the pre-feasibility and feasibility stages.
Previously, Mr. Velez was Director of New Business Development for a major family holding company, managing investment opportunities on construction, energy and agricultural industries, as well as belonging to the Board of Directors of many of the subsidiaries of the group. Between 2006 and 2013, he worked for two of the most important financial groups of Colombia, Grupo Aval and Bancolombia, leading the concession’s structuring, privatizations, roadshows with local and international investors, capitalizations, capital markets operations, mergers and acquisitions, and syndicated loans.
Mr. Velez has also participated in the public sector, as Bogota’s Deputy Director of Financing, where he led the structuring of the first issuance and placement of debt bonds in Colombia for a sub-national entity, and several bond issues in the local and international markets, loans with the multilateral banking institutions like International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Inter-American Development Bank and Development Bank of Latin America, and with commercial banking. Additionally, he conducted the financial evaluation of mega projects of the city and oversaw the AAA scoring of the city bonds when the major changed in 2004.
Mr. Velez is a permanent teacher of project finance and investment banking of different universities in Colombia, independent member of Board of Directors of enterprises of different industries and listed Expert Witness of the Arbitration Court of the Bogota's Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Velez holds a B.S. in economics from Universidad Autonoma de Manizales and a degree in Finance from Universidad de los Andes. He is on the Colombian List of Appraisers and on the Expert Witness Roster of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce.
