About Mary Ann
Mary Ann Kaptain is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in Los Angeles. She is a member of the Corporate Finance & Restructuring segment. Ms. Kaptain provides advisory services to both companies and lenders, including interim management positions, back-office improvement and reporting, cash management, liquidation and acquisition services and capital restructuring.
For more than 16 years, Ms. Kaptain’s experience as a financial consultant has often led to interim management roles. In one notable case, she assisted a contract manufacturer with an out-of-court restructuring and simultaneous sale, and was then engaged by new company management to serve as interim controller while improving the financial closing process and creating greater financial visibility to the lender group through the development of new reporting packages and flash reports. Ms. Kaptain also reviewed resumes, conducted interviews and participated in the selection of a new chief executive officer (“CEO”) and chief financial officer (“CFO”).
Ms. Kaptain has also frequently provided analytical support as part of a team supporting interim CFOs/chief restructuring officers (“CROs”) in distressed companies both in and outside of bankruptcy. Experiences pertaining to these engagements include sales and cash flow forecasting, benchmarking, management/personnel cuts, executive searches, capital expenditure (“CAPEX”) analyses, contract analyses and analytical support and ad-hoc analysis as needed. Her recent engagements include companies in the grocery, solar and restaurant industries.
Ms. Kaptain served as interim CFO for a German-owned solar company for 18 months during the sale of its U.S. operations to multiple buyers. Throughout this period, Ms. Kaptain was actively involved in the preparation of sale-related schedules and legal documents. She also oversaw the monthly financial statement preparation, prepared cash forecasts and supervised the collection, payroll and sales functions. During her tenure she resolved numerous disputes involving transition service agreements, sales contracts, lease agreements and taxing authorities.
Prior to her employment as a financial consultant, Ms. Kaptain worked for several corporations in the areas of treasury, financial planning and investor relations
Ms. Kaptain holds a B.S. in Accounting from California State University, Los Angeles and an M.B.A. in Corporate Finance and Investments from the University of Southern California. She is a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Analyst and a Certified Public Accountant in California. Ms. Kaptain is active in the Los Angeles bankruptcy and restructuring community, serving on the Southern California Turnaround Management Association board for many years.
