Matt Michael specializes in restructuring, bankruptcy proceedings, distressed company consulting, financial analyses and leading complex negotiations. Mr. Michael has 10 years of corporate restructuring experience and spent six years as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a consumer products company while also advising the owner’s family office on other investments.
In past roles, Mr. Michael has assisted investors, board members, senior management and creditors on a wide variety of matters. His project experience includes assisting WorldCom settle state and local tax claims; negotiating Lear Corporation’s restructuring plan for secured lenders; bankruptcy preparation, liquidity management, business planning and a contested valuation fight for WCI Steel; acquisition due diligence, business planning, liquidity management, vendor negotiations and bankruptcy preparation for automotive supplier Cadence Innovation; refinancing debt for a distressed global industrial company; modeling and assessing acquisition targets for automotive and metals clients; fixed cost rationalization, business plan modelling and review of strategic alternatives for a global consumer products company; business plan assessments for secured lenders; and investigating litigation strategies for unsecured creditors.
Other restructuring engagements Mr. Michael has worked on include Cornerstone Propane, Falcon Products, Metal Forming Technologies, Intermet, Asarco, Eddie Bauer, Global Brand Marketing, National Envelope, Dura and Citation.
In Mr. Michael’s role as the CFO for RFA Brands, LLC, he established all back-office functions for a carve-out, setting up a Chinese subsidiary and overseeing finance, accounting, HR, IT, legal and supply chain management while playing an active role in product development and customer negotiations. RFA customers included Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Costco, Amazon, Walgreens and airport stores. During that time, he also worked with the owner’s family office, advising on investments in wireless power, beverages, real estate and medical devices.
Mr. Michael began his career in corporate finance working for Intel Corporation where he supported their purchasing organization, coordinated the quarterly company-wide purchasing expenditure plan for C-suite approval, developed and approved negotiating plans and won multiple awards for creating design for cost models.
