About Ryan
Ryan Newman is a Managing Director in the Business Transformation practice and specializes in accounting and financial reporting. Mr. Newman’s expertise spans across public and private companies in a number of industries, including technology, travel and leisure, equipment rental, pharmaceutical and manufacturing. He has over 20 years of experience advising companies on technical accounting matters, providing interim management over financial reporting, developing and implementing financial reporting systems and advising on financial process improvements.
Mr. Newman has significant experience assisting corporations and law firms and has worked on financial restatements, spin-offs, special investigations, forensic accounting assignments, SEC financial reporting, financial statement audits and project management. Mr. Newman has provided advisory services related to specific complex accounting issues including revenue recognition, accounting for reserves, debt extinguishments and modifications, bankruptcy, restructuring, discontinued operations and sales incentives. He also has extensive experience and expertise with FASB pronouncements and related interpretations, compliance with SEC rules and regulations, preparation of Form 10-K and 10-Q filings and financial statement audits.
Some of Mr. Newman’s engagement highlights include assisting a publicly-traded company with the spin-off of a subsidiary, where he provided assistance to the new standalone public company including the preparation of numerous SEC filings, assistance with technical accounting issues, and the implementation of a new financial reporting system including the development and automation of the cash flow statement.
Mr. Newman also assisted a publicly-traded manufacturing company through a bankruptcy and financial restatement and served as the Director of Financial Reporting for the preparation of numerous Form 10-K and 10-Q filings and responses to SEC comment letters. Specific assistance included the maintenance of a financial restatement model and pushdown of restatement journal entries, as well as the preparation of complex accounting documentation related to bankruptcy accounting, debt extinguishment, restructuring, equity method accounting and discontinued operations.
Mr. Newman also assisted a $10 billion publicly-traded company through a restatement and multi-year review of numerous accounts receivable reserves and other liabilities. He identified and assessed numerous errors and developed and implemented new methodologies to comply with GAAP. In addition, he assisted a publicly-traded pharmaceutical company through a multi-year financial restatement resulting from the improper accounting for numerous types of sales deductions including rebates, chargebacks, discounts, returns and sales and marketing incentives.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Newman was a Director in the Forensic and Litigation Consulting practice of Huron Consulting and prior to that worked in the assurance practices of two “Big 4” national accounting firms.
Mr. Newman holds a B.S. in accountancy from Bentley University. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
