Oversight and management of conflicts of interest in research, whether individual or institutional, is always complicated, but for institutions which employ the most eminent researchers in the world, it is extraordinarily vexing. The more sophisticated and experienced the researchers may be the more opportunities will exist to partner with industry, venture capitalists, and other organizations so that the financial upside of scientific discoveries can be shared. Striking that delicate balance between fostering entrepreneurship and maintaining scientific independence is no easy feat. Yet, a research organization’s and its researchers’ reputations depend on knowing how far and deep those relationships can/should go.
