Adrian Smith is a Senior Director in the FTI Economic and Financial Consulting practice and is based in London.
Adrian is a chartered accountant and has 19 years’ experience of financial analysis relating to international arbitration, civil and criminal litigation, mediation, business interruption claims, business valuation, asset tracing, and regulatory matters. He has provided advice to clients and their legal teams in Austria, France, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Adrian has prepared expert and other reports including in matters before the High Court of England and Wales (Chancery Division, Queen’s Bench Division and the Technology and Construction Court); the Amsterdam Court of Appeal (Enterprise Chamber); the Court of Milan; the New Jersey State Court; the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, ICC and LCIA arbitration forums; and the Financial Conduct Authority’s Regulatory Decisions Committee.
Adrian has given oral evidence before the High Court.
In recent years, Adrian’s practice has focused on expert financial advice in the context of complex, high-value disputes. Many of these matters require the quantification of loss and damage or advice relating to accounting issues, including the application of international or local accounting standards.
Adrian recently provided expert advice to the British Dental Association regarding the adequacy, consistency and sufficiency of financial information provided by the UK’s dental regulator, the General Dental Council, in support of certain fee proposals. Adrian’s report was deployed in connection with a judicial review. The Court ruled that the regulator’s consultation was not transparent and was thus unlawful.
Adrian began his career with Deloitte & Touche, London as an auditor of mainly large international companies. He has been appointed by the Financial Conduct Authority as an investigator under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and has undertaken financial investigations for agents of the Treasury Solicitor and the UK government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Adrian received a bachelor of music degree from the University of London and a postgraduate diploma from the Royal College of Music, of which he is an associate. Adrian is a chartered accountant and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He is a practising associate of The Academy of Experts.
