Bernard O’Neil is a Managing Director in the FTI Healthcare group of the FTI Corporate Finance practice and is based in Brentwood. Mr. O’Neil has more than 30 years of experience in health system planning and management. His expertise includes hospital operations, strategy, bankruptcy, mergers and acquisitions, demography, market analysis and professional recruitment.

Mr. O’Neil has led or played a key role in approximately 30 engagements for FTI Consulting, including hospital turnaround, hospital disposition, rationalization of hospital mergers, debt covenant violation studies and performance improvement. He has also served as interim chief executive officer for a large community hospital, a small community hospital and an urban integrated healthcare delivery system.

Besides serving in the role of chief administration officer for healthcare clients, Mr. O’Neil supports FTI Consulting’s success through recruitment, engagement staffing, contract administration, product development and general problem solving. In addition to his direct participation in select client engagements, Mr. O’Neil serves in a background advisory capacity for most major projects.

Mr. O’Neil joined FTI Consulting in 2005 when it acquired Cambio Health Solutions. He had been with Cambio Health Solutions since 1994. He began his career in city planning and switched to health planning in 1973. In 1975, he became planning director of a large teaching hospital in New Jersey. Subsequently, he assumed responsibility for hospital planning for the northeastern region of a national hospital company. Much of his work was with teaching hospitals in New York City. He spent six years with the Massachusetts Hospital Association working with the Boston-area teaching hospitals and the state’s community hospitals in the areas of multi-institutional systems development and policy analysis.

Mr. O’Neil was president of a consulting firm that specialized in assisting hospitals in developing new technology, especially in the areas of imaging, oncology and laboratory medicine. In addition, he served as a senior administrator in a large Connecticut teaching hospital, where he was responsible for a merger with a second teaching hospital, the establishment of a new rehabilitation hospital and the merger of two large psychiatric programs. He also had responsibility for several large clinical departments and physician recruitment.

Mr. O’Neil holds an M.U.P. from Texas A&M University and a B.A. in mathematics from Harvard College.
