Brian Kennedy is a Senior Managing Director in the Strategic Communications segment at FTI Consulting, and is based in Houston and Washington, D.C. He also serves as the global head of the segment’s Energy & Natural Resources industry practice, and is part of the segment’s Public Affairs practice.

In his capacity as industry-practice leader, he oversees a multidisciplinary team of corporate, crisis, financial, litigation and regulatory communications professionals. With more than 15 years of experience in energy-and-natural resources-related communications, national media affairs and public policy, Mr. Kennedy is uniquely qualified to help companies in the industry navigate complex communications challenges. Numerous Fortune 100 companies have relied on his strategic-communications expertise to help mitigate reputational threats associated with federal-agency and congressional-oversight-committee investigations; financial and operational crises; major litigation; and shareholder activism.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Kennedy served as press secretary and chief spokesman for the then-House Minority Leader, now-House Speaker, John Boehner (R-Ohio). Before that, he served as deputy chief of staff and director of communications for the House Committee on Natural Resources, with oversight and investigations authority into the laws and federal agencies that govern coal, gas, minerals and oil development activity on the 2.5 billion acres of onshore and offshore federal land.

During his tenure on the committee, Brian played a key role in the development and passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the Deep Ocean Energy Resources Act of 2006, and many other energy-related bills. He also served as chief spokesman for both the speaker’s Task Force for Affordable Natural Gas and the House Energy Action Team (HEAT); and is a founding member of the Washington, D.C. office for the Institute for Energy Research (IER), a not-for-profit foundation focused on the advancement of free-market energy policy.

His current and former clients include companies that span the spectrum of major integrated and independent oil-and-gas companies; national oil-and-gas industry trade associations; oilfield services providers, pipeline companies; and refiners. Notably, Mr. Kennedy applied his expertise on behalf of offshore drilling contractor Transocean, serving as the company’s lead crisis response strategist and chief spokesman following the April 2010 Macondo incident in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mr. Kennedy has been named to the highly regarded M&A Advisor “40 Under 40” and the National Journal “Power Players” in Washington, D.C. for his work. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the College of the Holy Cross.
