David Thompson is a Senior Managing Director and the National Leader of Forensic Technology and Investigations at FTI Consulting. He is based in Melbourne, Australia.
Mr. Thompson is a forensic technology, security and investigations specialist with more than 25 years’ experience in computer forensics, electronic discovery, technology security and risk consulting, as well as computer, fraud, corruption and misconduct investigations.
Previously, Mr. Thompson was a Partner in Deloitte’s Forensic practice for 10 years and the founder and national leader of the Forensic Technology practice. Prior to this he founded and led the e-Business and Network Security Consulting practice for the firm for more than four years.
Prior to joining Deloitte, Mr. Thompson was the Head of Risk Management, Systems and Security for the Australian operations of the global Mondex/Mastercard smart card based electronic cash scheme owned by the four major Australian banks.
Mr. Thompson has also previously had a lengthy law enforcement career with Victoria Police, during which he founded the Computer Crime Investigation Squad and managed the computer crime investigation and computer forensic function for 10 years. This came after an earlier specialisation in large-scale commercial, banking and government fraud and corruption investigation.
Mr. Thompson has extensive local, national and international law enforcement experience including with numerous international law enforcement agencies. He was a founding member of the Interpol Global IT Crime Working Group and the Inaugural Chairman of the International Organisation for Computer Evidence (IOCE).
Mr. Thompson’s extensive experience in computer/cyber forensic investigation has included leading a number of Australia’s early computer/cyber crime prosecutions. More recently, Mr. Thompson has provided computer and security consulting, incident investigation and technology forensic expert services for large commercial and Government sector clients, and has assisted in large-scale civil litigation matters.
Mr. Thompson has been appointed a forensic technology adviser and expert in a range of civil and criminal matters, including large-scale class action matters which has included involvement in many legal cases from initial inception through to presentation of evidence in court trials.
Mr. Thompson also has extensive experience in the security design, review and testing of Internet and corporate network system risks and controls. He has led the delivery of numerous network security assessments for national and multinational corporations, which have included security vulnerability and exploitation testing and review of network access points, internal network security, host and application system security.
