Eric Ek is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in New York. He is a member of the Corporate Finance & Restructuring segment.
Mr. Ek has more than 25 years of strategic, financial, transactional and operational experience. His ability to assess, develop and implement operational and financial improvement initiatives has repeatedly enhanced value for stakeholders.
Mr. Ek has extensive experience executing complex restructurings and turnarounds. He has significant U.S. and cross-border transaction experience, including valuations and mergers and acquisitions (“M&A”). He has worked with private equity firms and provided advice to clients in diverse domestic and international industries, including automotive, manufacturing, food processing, paper, horticulture, energy, retail and entertainment.
Mr. Ek has extensive interim management experience serving as Chief Restructuring Officer (“CRO”), President, Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) and Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) to various distressed companies. Most recently, he was the interim CFO of Catalyst Paper during its financial restructuring, where he led the company through it’s Canadian Business Corporation Act plan of arrangement and Chapter 15 filing. Mr. Ek also was interim CEO, CFO and CRO of Zelenka Farms, which was sold after a successful Chapter 11 and 363 sale. Before that, he was the interim CEO and CRO of Grede Foundries, where he managed and restructured the business.
In addition, Mr. Ek has represented companies and creditors in numerous formal and informal restructurings, and has acted as financial advisor to boards of directors and/or principal shareholders in the purchase or sale of both healthy and underperforming businesses. He also has provided expert testimony on issues related to valuations and corporate restructurings, and has worked internationally and completed several cross border transactions.
A representative list of Mr. Ek’s client experience includes AFA Foods Inc., Black Diamond Capital Management, Burroughs Corporation, Calsonic, Catalyst Paper Company, Color Spot Inc., Custom Food Products, Elo Touch Technologies, Grede Foundries, Gardens Alive!, Hines Growers LLC, Kawasaki Steel, Omega Refining LLC, Panavision, Preferred Meal Systems, Porteous Fastener Company, Quality Foods, Samaritan Health Systems, Silicon Graphics, Special Devices Inc., Target Media Inc., Unical Aviation, Western Peterbuilt and Zelenka Farms.
Mr. Ek joined FTI Consulting with its acquisition of CDG Group, where he was a Senior Managing Director. Prior to that he was the President, CEO, CFO and Board Member of Custom Food Products, a multi-plant value added food processor. In his role as CFO, he led the company through a leveraged acquisition. As President and CEO, Mr. Ek developed his operating skills and “hands on” approach doubling the revenue base, increasing its profitability and expanding the business’s footprint in the U.S. As CRO, Mr. Ek led the company through a restructuring and a successful Chapter 11 and 363 process.
Before that, Mr. Ek led Ernst & Young’s Western Region’s Merger & Acquisition Practice. Previously, he was a Managing Director of Takenaka & Company, where he specialized in international investment banking, with a focus on Asian investments in the U.S. Mr. Ek began his turnaround career by working with several underperforming internationally owned companies.
Mr. Ek holds a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Southern California and a M.Sc. in Business Administration from the University of Bath. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (“AICPA”) and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants.
