James Doherty is a Managing Director in the Strategic Communications segment at FTI Consulting and is based in London. James leads the consultancy offerings for sub-Saharan Africa.

James has 25 years of experience in formulating strategies and executing to plan, including high stake reputation and issues management, campaign services and the rebranding of corporates, politicians and political issues.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, James provided independent consultancy services to extractives sector clients in sub-Saharan Africa and he was previously a director at Bell Pottinger, where he co-led a long-term assignment in Iraq, and provided counsel and programs for a number of African governments.

Prior to this he was Director of Public Relations at BT Group in London, and before this he was a Senior Vice President with Ogilvy Public Relations in Amsterdam and Washington, D.C.

He is experienced in complex and unstable environments and has delivered actionable and measurable interventions for multinationals, investors, governments, NGOs and individuals in several African markets, including the DRC, Gabon, Guinea, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia and South Africa.

James also works on brand management and large scale change programs, helping organizations and individuals develop and deliver the narrative needed to manage their reputations and achieve their commercial objectives, all underscored by a constant focus on measurability, accountability and return on investment. He speaks fluent French and has lived and worked in the Netherlands, the US, Australia and South Africa.
