Wit Derby is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in New York. He is a member of the Corporate Finance & Restructuring segment.
Mr. Derby has more than 30 years of experience in U.S. capital markets, including leveraged and structured finance, portfolio and risk management, leasing, trade finance, high yield sales and trading and the analysis of distressed situations. With a focus on operational and financial restructuring, as well as creditor and lender services, Mr. Derby provides FTI Consulting with national coverage to identify prospective engagements to deliver the valued expertise of FTI Consulting colleagues to assist clients.
Mr. Derby has worked at several prominent global commercial and investment banks where he acquired diverse experience as a fixed income analyst, a Fortune 500 relationship officer, a senior and mezzanine lender, a credit and loan workout specialist, a high yield institutional salesperson, a leveraged loan portfolio manager and an advisor on distressed enterprises.
Mr. Derby has broad knowledge of collateralized securitizations, credit derivatives, enterprise valuation, financial modeling and forecasting, budgeting and strategic planning and financial reporting. He has developed and deconstructed complex valuation models for corporations and investment vehicles with a focus on underlying free cash flow and its structural priority, advised on financial and operational restructurings, bankruptcy reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, debt portfolio valuations and benchmarking analyses. Mr. Derby has analyzed the collateral, structure and documentation of complex investment vehicles for distressed acquisitions, including commercial and residential backed mortgages, collateralized debt and loan obligations and other structured credit obligations.
Mr. Derby has experience in enterprise valuation, restructuring and bankruptcy reorganization with many corporate and investment entities, including Ames Department Stores, Best Products, Bramalea Limited, Central Capital, Columbia Gas Systems, Delta Airlines, Federated Department Stores, Friendly Ice Cream, Hilton Hotels, Kendall Corp, Memorex Telex, News Corporation, Northwest Airlines, RJR Nabisco Capital, R.H. Macy, Trump Shuttle, Southland, Tollman-Hundley Hotel Group, Toshuku America and Triangle Pacific.
Mr. Derby has experience in analyzing and trading distressed situations, including Adelphia Communications, Arch Communications-PageNet, Birmingham Steel, Calpine, Choice One, Enron, Entegra, Finova, Footstar, Global Crossing, Harnischfeger, Imperial Sugar, Iridium, Kmart, La Paloma & Lake Road Generating, Le Nature, Liberty Electric, Mirant, Parmalat, Solutia, Spiegel and Stage Stores.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Derby was a Senior Analyst at Kingsland Capital where he managed the firm’s credit exposure in the business services, financial services, environmental services, cable and satellite and transportation sectors across five CLO funds. Before joining Kingsland, Mr. Derby was a Managing Director at Bear Stearns where he focused on high yield fixed income, including analyzing, investing and trading in stressed and distressed loans and significant trade claims. Prior to his nine year tenure at Bear Stearns, Mr. Derby spent 10 years focused on credit analysis and portfolio management as a Vice President and as the Senior Credit Officer of the New York branch of the Kyowa Bank (later known as Asahi Bank) where he managed credit review and loan workout, specializing in restructuring credits in the bank’s North American real estate and commercial loan portfolios, and theretofore as an Associate at Security Pacific Merchant Bank where he concentrated on credit review and structuring leveraged buyouts. Mr. Derby began his career in banking and finance as a Fortune 500 relationship officer for the Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN) and the Westpac Banking Corporation after completing a two year comprehensive bank credit training program at ABN and the LaSalle Bank.
Mr. Derby has served on steering and creditor committees and has contributed as a panelist on discussions regarding insolvency and restructuring, analyzing and investing in distressed situations, mergers and acquisitions and structured and leveraged finance.
Mr. Derby holds a B.A. in Economics and American Economic History from Cornell University. He holds FINRA Series 7 and Series 63 certifications, and passed all three parts of the Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor examination.
