Ronan Collins is a Chartered Civil and Structural Engineer with more than 28 years of industry experience covering engineering design, construction management and strategic digital delivery advisory for large-scale capital projects. Ronan has a first-class honors degree in civil engineering and is certified as a Project Information Manager in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. He has worked across a variety of sectors, including national railway, international airports, major highway infrastructure, complex industrial facilities and multiuse commercial developments, with significant expertise in rail and road transport, commercial real estate and construction technology solutions.
Recognized as a reputable advisor to national agencies and international clients, Ronan has advised on the design coordination and construction management of international airport and high-speed railway terminals, multiple underground metro projects, data centers and semi-conductor manufacturing facilities. For these clients, he was instrumental in establishing the use of Building Information Modelling (“BIM”); reality capture solutions, including lidar laser scanning; photogrammetry using drones; 360 degree cameras; augmented reality (“AR”); virtual reality (“VR”); geographic information system (“GIS”) platforms; paperless construction utilizing mobile apps; data analytics and project management office (“PMO”) reporting dashboards; and common data environment (“CDE”) information management systems.
Ronan has led engineering and digital transformation teams where he was responsible for the implementation of cost-saving productivity improvements for the delivery of high-value, complex capital works for clients. He has led and delivered digital engineering transformations for major capital projects and has broad practical and technical solutions expertise, including project controls functional design and systems implementation; civil engineering; infrastructure design coordination; construction management; independent portfolio, program and project digital engineering audits; and asset and facilities management strategy creation. Additionally, Ronan is expert at digital twin models, BIM and lean production.
Ronan has managed the deployment of digital project management solutions, including BIM and Digital Engineering for architecture, structure and electrical and mechanical (“E&M”) engineering solutions, as well as the facilitation of the implementation of innovative processes. He has assisted clients with the identification of goals and expectations for owners and investors; the implementation of industry standards, including PAS 1192 and ISO 19650; the mapping and definition of complex design management and engineering coordination processes; the development and management of project information management plans; and the management of diverse cultural teams across various countries.
Ronan brings 20 years’ experience in the delivery of complex, large-scale underground metros in dense urban environments. Additionally, he has broad experience in the design and construction of airport facilities, including international terminals, baggage handling systems (“BHS”), air cargo facilities and multimodal transport hubs.
Relevant Experience:
- Led a team of industry experts to engage with the construction industry in Hong Kong and develop the Hong Kong BIM Standards based on the principles of UK PAS 1192 Information Standards
- Served as the Digital Engineering Advisor to the Surbana Jurong, Arup and Mott MacDonald design team for the scheme design phase of the Changi Airport Terminal 5 in Singapore
- Appointed as BIM Director for Red Sea Development luxury hotel development projects in Saudi Arabia; responsible for overseeing the management of BIM deliverables by international architectural practices and engineering practices; established innovative design coordination and constructability review processes to improve the luxury resort guest experience using cloud-enabled solutions
- Served as the BIM Director to Gammon Construction, the main contractor for the Midfield Concourse in the Hong Kong International Airport; managed the coordination of steelwork, roof cladding, facades, structures and building services for terminal; fixed link bridges, the BHS and the automatic people mover (“APM”)
- Served as the BIM Manager for Cathay Pacific Air Cargo Terminal; managed engineering design processes for Meinhardt & Aedas at the design stage, including coordination with automated industrial cargo systems
- Managed site coordination processes for Gammon Hip Hing JV during the construction of the Cathay Pacific Air Cargo terminal to resolve site coordination, offsite manufacturing detailing, precast installation and modular E&M assembly detailing
- Served as the BIM Manager for New Doha International Airport in Qatar; managed the construction coordination process for Ekin’s project E&M contractors for the main terminal; included interfaces with the BHS
- Served as the Digital Engineering Lead for HSS Engineers for the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (“KVMRT”) Line 3 in Kuala Lumpur
- Served as the Project Information Manager for Gamuda Engineering for the Kuala Lumpur Singapore High Speed Rail (“MyHSR”) in Malaysia; included 180km of trackwork, Kuala Lumpur Terminal and two stations
- Served as the BIM Director for KVMRT Line 2 in Kuala Lumpur for MMC Gamuda JV; responsible for BIM implementation on nine new underground stations, an interchange station, 13km of twin tunnels and eight ancillary structures
- Led the BIM team for the coordination of civils, structures and building services for the Mass Transit Railway (“MTR”) on the West Kowloon Terminus’ Express Rail Link in Hong Kong
- Managed construction planning for Bachy Soletanche using 4D BIM solutions for Marina Bay Station’s Thomson Line in Singapore
- Managed the coordination of steel fabrication, cladding detailing and associated interface detailing and documentation for the Leighton Gammon JV contractor for the Chinese High Speed Rail Terminus at West Kowloon in Hong Kong
