Deryck Helkaa

Deryck Helkaa has more than 25 years of experience in providing transaction and restructuring advisory services to companies and their stakeholders. Mr. Helkaa is experienced in representing creditors, lenders, shareholders, management and boards of directors in both formal and out-of-court restructurings and cross-border cases.

Mr. Helkaa’s experience comprises a wide variety of industries including the oil and gas industry, mining, retail, real estate and construction. He has been involved with a wide variety of clients including public and private companies, various lender groups, with many of his assignments involving international operations, including many cross-border cases.

Mr. Helkaa has significant experience assisting both debtors and creditors in preparing business and restructuring plans, debt facility amendments, forecasting and budgeting and overall strategy and negotiations with stakeholder groups. He has been the lead on several formal insolvencies, including numerous roles as court monitor in Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (“CCAA”) proceedings, court-appointed receiver and foreign representative in Chapter 15 and Chapter 11 cases.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Helkaa was a Partner of the Transaction and Advisory Services Group at Ernst & Young.

Relevant Experience:

• Served as interim Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) to Flair Airlines
• Served as Chief Restructuring Officer (“CRO”) to Tuscany International Drilling
• Served as Financial Officer to Bonavista Energy Corporation; Stuart Olson; a bank syndicate to a large Western Canada-based construction company with more than $250 million in loans; and a bank syndicate to an E&P company with more than $500 million in debt
• Served as court-appointed Monitor in the CCAA proceedings of Argent Energy; Coalspur Mines; Dominion Diamond Mines; Dynamic Entertainment; Endurance Energy; Lightstream Resources; Longrun Resources; Lynx Air; JMB Crushing Ltd.; and Quicksilver Resources Canada
• Served as court-appointed receiver for Eagle Energy; Pacer Promec Energy; Twin Butte Energy; US Oil Sands; Wolverine Construction; and two Calgary-based office buildings
