Access Sydney is a leading not-for-profit community organisation in Sydney, offering accessible and affordable transport and social connection for older people, people with disability and people who are transport disadvantaged. Access Sydney sought to explore options for sustainability, strengthen its current position and identify future pathways that went beyond survival to focus on long-term resilience, innovation and impact. FTI Consulting was engaged to develop a comprehensive assessment of the organisation’s operating model and produce a clear set of sustainable growth pathways to strengthen its sector position and partnerships.
Our Impact
- A comprehensive assessment of Access Sydney’s current operating model revealed pressures caused by demographic change, infrastructure constraints and evolving funding arrangements, thus identifying structural and strategic challenges that impacted the client’s ability to compete and grow within the Greater Sydney community transport market.
- By analysing the competitor landscape — including service offerings, delivery models and emerging provider profiles — key market trends shaping the future of community transport were identified that enabled Access Sydney to better understand its strategic position and the opportunities available to diversify, innovate and expand its services.
- The work resulted in a clear set of growth pathways, each grounded in operational reality and aligned with the organisation’s mission, providing Access Sydney with a structured decision-making framework, equipping leadership with the clarity needed to pursue sustainable growth, strengthen partnerships and respond proactively to sector reform.
Our Role
- Our experts explored strategic options that would strengthen the client’s market position and support long-term sustainability, assisting the client in understanding how it could evolve to remain resilient, innovative and impactful while meeting the needs of its clients within a rapidly changing operating environment.
- FTI Consulting conducted a detailed analysis of Access Sydney’s operating environment, including client demographics, infrastructure capacity, funding mechanisms and the competitor landscape within the Greater Sydney community transport market, complemented by in-depth discussions with senior leaders within the organisation to understand operational challenges and strategic constraints.
- Based on this analysis, FTI Consulting developed five strategic options for Access Sydney’s future direction — encompassing service innovation, operational redesign and potential partnerships — and for each, the associated risks, benefits and implementation considerations were outlined, ensuring leadership had a clear understanding of feasibility and impact.
- Two preferred pathways were recommended, tailored to Access Sydney’s current context and long-term aspirations, and these options best addressed the organisation’s current operating challenges, while maintaining alignment with its organisational vision – to provide older people and people with disabilities with affordable and accessible transport, as well as meaningful opportunities for social connection.
