The 2025 U.S. Online Retail Report reveals that the explosive growth of e-commerce during COVID-19 was largely a pull-forward of existing trends, not a long-term disruption. Online sales, while still strong, are returning to a trajectory more aligned with pre-pandemic patterns. E-commerce now accounts for around 23.5% of retail sales, with a projected ceiling of 30% by decade’s end.
Direct-to-consumer (“DTC”) brands face new pressures as customer acquisition costs rise and profitability becomes essential, causing a shift from pure e-commerce to omnichannel strategies. The report explores strategic paths for DTC growth. The next winners in retail will be those who invest in flexible infrastructure, deepen cross-channel capabilities, and strategically manage margin across sales avenues.
