How do you address an accountability gap in international law?

With the UN and the International Criminal Court unable to provide accountability for the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a campaign for an alternative mechanism was needed. Our experts helped drive change by providing strategic counsel to a new independent human rights non-government organisation, Justice and Accountability for Ukraine (“JAFUA”), which was established to advocate for a special international tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and its people.

Our Impact

In September 2024, the UK's newly elected Labour Government officially announced its intention to support the special tribunal for Ukraine.

In partnership with JAFUA and the Office of the President of Ukraine, our team organised the high-profile London Conference on the Special Tribunal for Ukraine in February 2024 to advance the approach to establishing a special tribunal.

The conference received more than 140 registrations, including members of parliament, government officials, diplomats and attorneys.

Leveraging our extensive network to build momentum and consensus

  1. FTI Consulting oversaw all stages of the formation of JAFUA, launched the organisation’s social media presence and worked to confirm high-profile lawyers and barristers in support of its mission.

  2. Our experts managed the international campaign for establishing the special tribunal and identifying opportunities, limitations and potential risks.

  3. In partnership with JAFUA and the Office of the President of Ukraine, our team organised a conference in London to advance the approach to establishing a special tribunal.

Supporting the creation of JAFUA and the delivery of the conference on the special tribunal has been a highlight of my time at FTI Consulting and career so far. It has been a privilege to work on driving the political, legal and public debate on such an important international issue.
