Noel Matthews

Noel Matthews provides expert economic and financial evidence to international arbitration tribunals and before national courts. Typically, this involves the quantification of lost profits, business valuation, assessments of wasted costs or advice relating to accounting matters. Noel also provides valuation and economic consulting advice to clients in non-contentious situations. He is a chartered accountant and is based in London. Noel leads the EMEA Economic and Financial Consulting team at FTI.

For more than twenty-five years, Noel has advised clients across a wide range of industries and contexts including economic loss assessments, business valuation, economic regulation and corporate strategy. Since 2006, the majority of Noel’s work has related to disputes. He is frequently instructed as an expert witness and has been cross-examined as an expert witness on thirteen occasions. His international arbitration experience encompasses both commercial and investor-state arbitration.

Across Noel's whole career, he has led or assisted in the preparation of expert reports in more than 100 matters. His experience includes the preparation of reports for submission to the courts of England and Wales, as well as to ICC, ICSID, NAFTA, PCA, DIAC, LCIA and CAS tribunals, and tribunals convened under UNCITRAL rules. He has also assisted in the preparation of reports for government departments, other national courts, tax authorities and competition and regulatory bodies.

Noel is recognised in the Lexology Index (formerly Who's Who Legal) as a leading expert witness in arbitration each year from 2017 onwards. Lexology describes Noel as “articulate, quick, informative and convincing”. He is listed as a “Global Elite Thought Leader” in the 2024 and 2025 editions of the Index.

Noel holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Warwick. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.
