Phil Smith

Phil Smith is an e-discovery and legal technology expert with nearly two decades of technical and consulting experience assisting clients across Asia Pacific, the UK, Europe and the United States with solving large and complex data challenges in the context of legal and regulatory disputes. Mr. Smith is recognised as one of Australia’s leading experts in applying artificial intelligence to e-discovery and has led responses to many of the country’s most complex royal commissions, regulatory investigations, data breaches and contentious disputes.

Mr. Smith brings pragmatic technical experience constructing comprehensive and cost-effective solutions through the application of advanced technology. He consistently helps clients streamline the inordinate challenges of large and complex data volumes common in modern day disputes. Mr. Smith has spent more than 10 years working with AI in legal disputes and has advised courts, regulators, law firms and clients on the efficient use and defensibility of AI technology.

Prior to joining FTI Technology, Mr. Smith led the e-discovery and data team for an international law firm.

Relevant Experience:

• Led the data response team of a large bank; assisted with obligations arising from the Financial Services Industry Royal Commission
• Served as the leader of the e-discovery data response team assisting a telecommunications company with responding to obligations and class action litigation arising from a data breach
• Provided e-discovery leadership for an international construction company in the first matter in Australian courts involving the use and approval of technology-assisted review
• Led the data response team of an international health insurance company; assisted with obligations brought on by competition regulatory investigation; included analysing more than 250 hours of recorded customer service calls
