The largest bank in Ukraine, JSC CB PrivatBank (“PrivatBank”), pursued a $1.9 billion claim with interest from its former owners in a landmark fraud case. International law firm Hogan Lovells instructed FTI Consulting.
Our Impact:
- Following one of the most complex fraud trials ever to take place in the London courts, the judge Mr. Justice William Trowler ruled in favour of PrivatBank, awarding it the full value of its claim.
- At a further hearing in November 2025, the judge decided to award PrivatBank interest in the total sum of $1.19 billion, one of the largest awards of interest ever made, bringing the total to be paid to $3 billion.
- FTI Consulting expert witnesses Senior Managing Directors Ian Thompson and Mark Bezant were cited with approval by the judge.1
Our Role:
- FTI Consulting’s forensic accountants and data analytics experts analysed PrivatBank’s database of several million transactions and identified how the funds were used and how the loans were purportedly repaid.
- The team prepared a vast matrix of calculations to assist the High Court in determining PrivatBank’s loss and the interest due.
- In addition, our valuation specialists analysed a range of assets, including petrol stations, oil and gas facilities, hotels and office buildings, that the defendants claimed were transferred to PrivatBank as repayment of the loans, and valued the shares allegedly pledged as collateral.
