About Tom
Tom Shaw is a Managing Director in FTI Consulting’s European Tax Advisory group and has more than 14 years’ experience advising clients in all sectors, including FTSE 100 and 250 businesses, on the UK and overseas Indirect Tax implications of their operations.
Tom is FTI Consulting’s UK Indirect Tax lead for transactions and restructuring projects and has considerable experience advising corporates, funds, PE houses and administrators on the Indirect Tax implications of merger, acquisition and restructuring activity. Tom also leads FTI Consulting’s Life Sciences Indirect Tax practice, advising pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology businesses, medical technology companies and healthcare providers on Indirect Tax obligations. He counts among his clients a number of other large and complex corporate businesses, including those in the automotive sector.
Tom has deep experience advising on the application of UK statute and case law to supply chains and transactions, managing tax authority interaction and leading dispute and appeal strategy, amongst other areas.
Aside from advising on core Indirect Tax matters — such as value-added tax (‘VAT’) and other sales taxes — Tom is one of FTI Consulting’s ESG Tax leads, representing the Indirect Tax function on a national and global level, and is responsible for raising awareness around the connection between Tax ESG. In this role, he has worked with businesses seeking to define and implement an ESG Tax operating model, often working to understand and advise on operational risk areas, such as staffing or data availability; tax reporting processes; and the touchpoints between an organisation’s ESG strategy and tax law. Whilst he trained as a UK VAT specialist, Tom has considerable experience advising clients on the impact of UK environmental taxes, including Climate Change Levy, Aggregates Levy, Landfill Tax and Plastic Packaging Tax, as well as analogous overseas regimes, on their value chains.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Tom spent more than 12 years working in Deloitte UK’s Indirect Tax advisory practice.
