Code.org — an education innovation nonprofit dedicated to providing all students with the opportunity to learn computer science as a driver of equality and development for underprivileged minorities and underserved areas for free as part of their core K-12 education — had become well-recognised in schools across North America, but its brand did not have the resources or organisational support globally to have the same impact in other parts of the world.
Seeing an opportunity to scale its influence globally, Code.org began a pro bono partnership with FTI Consulting’s Dubai-based professionals to help bring its curriculum to countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
FTI Consulting and Code.org identified 11 countries that would benefit from Code.org’s curriculum, including Spain, Italy, Morocco, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Kenya, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.
Experts developed and proposed five-year plans for countrywide integration of Code.org’s resources and worked alongside each country to measure agreed-upon key performance indicators.
The team raised awareness by leveraging influential figures, public campaigns and key events, and worked to create public and private partnerships to help fund scholarships for training teachers on Code.org’s resources.

To date, FTI Consulting has contributed approximately 8,000 hours to the project, garnered interest from more than 20 countries and issued 15 memorandums of understanding to various government agencies and private companies.
Striving to give every child around the world an opportunity to learn coding and computer science is a very ambitious goal, but the impact will be colossal in terms of its ability to develop critical expertise and provide access to the increasingly highly skilled world of work.
