Casey Estep has more than 25 years of professional experience in the healthcare consulting industry, focusing on regulatory compliance, investigations and disputes, mainly in the provider sector. Much of Ms. Estep’s work is focused on assisting clients in the detection and prevention of regulatory compliance risks ranging from billing and coding issues to identifying gaps and strengthening corporate compliance programs.
Ms. Estep has led Independent Review Organization (“IRO”) teams under Corporate Integrity Agreements (“CIA”). She has managed the annual reviews for more than 15 CIA work plans over the last 23 years, which typically include developing detailed work plans and timelines, overseeing the review, analyzing results, interviewing key client personnel and preparing the final reports submitted to the Office of the Inspector General (“OIG”). Her clients include hospitals and health systems, institutional pharmacy providers and device companies.
Ms. Estep has worked under privilege on a substantial number of engagements, including provider self-disclosure reviews under the Department of Health and Human Service OIG Self-Disclosure Protocol, as well as a number of Department of Justice investigations, mainly related to the False Claims Act. Significantly, she has led all phases of multiple large-scale investigations related to inpatient “short stays” at several providers nationwide. Ms. Estep managed the InterQual® review of medical records, analysis of providers against industry, coordination of second level physician review, overall results analysis and synthesizing, calculations of error rates and reporting to counsel. She also assisted counsel in compiling detailed presentations and financial models that would be presented and provided to the Department of Justice in settlement negotiations.
Ms. Estep is certified in Healthcare Compliance (“CHC”) and is a member of the Health Care Compliance Associate (“HCCA”). Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Ms. Estep served as a Supervisor with McBee Associates, a management and financial health care consulting firm in Columbia, MD. She also spent more than three years with Navigant Consulting and two years with Arthur Andersen LLP, both based in Baltimore, MD.
Ms. Estep holds a B.S. from The Pennsylvania State University in Health Policy and Administration.
