About Deryck
Deryck Helkaa specializes in providing transaction and restructuring advisory services to companies and their stakeholders, including representing creditors, lenders, shareholders, management and boards of directors in both formal and out-of-court restructurings and cross-border cases. Mr. Helkaa has more than 20 years of experience, including industry expertise in oil and gas, with companies operating in exploration and production, midstream and oilfield services sectors.
Mr. Helkaa has been involved with a wide variety of clients, including public and private companies, various lender groups, with many of his assignments involving international operations, including many cross-border cases.
In regard to his financial advisory work, Mr. Helkaa served as the financial advisor to the noteholders of a large Calgary based oil and gas producer with its operations based in India and Asia and to a first lien syndicate of a heavy oil producer in Western Canada with over $800 million in debt. He also advised a bond holders’ syndicate of a large, public exploration and production company with operations in Western Canada and represented the first lien holders in Connacher Oil and Gas Ltd.’s Canada Business Corporations Act restructuring. Mr. Helkaa additionally served as the financial advisor to a large syndicate with respect to their $250 million loan to an Alberta based oil and gas producer.
Mr. Helkaa served as the Monitor in the CCAA proceedings of SemCanada Group and Calpine Canada, both global energy companies with its Canadian operations comprising crude oil and gas marketing, operation of gas processing facilities and power generation. He served as Court-appointed Monitor of Lightstream Resources, Quicksilver Resources Canada Inc., Endurance Energy and Argent Energy Trust. Additional court-appointed work includes acting as the Court-appointed Receiver of Twin Butte Energy, US Oil Sands, Scollard Energy, Waldron Energy Corporation, Palliser Oil and Gas Ltd., Argosy Energy Inc., Solara Exploration Ltd., and Trafina Energy Ltd., all publicly-traded oil and gas exploration and development companies with operations in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. He also served as the Court Officer for Wellpoint Services during its Canadian insolvency proceeding and Chapter 15 filing.
Additionally, Mr. Helkaa served as Chief Restructuring Officer of Tuscany International Drilling Inc. during its Canadian proceeding and Chapter 11 filing, a provider of contract drilling and work-over services to the oil and gas industry in Africa, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Helkaa was a Partner of the Transaction and Advisory Services group in Ernst & Young.
Mr. Helkaa was the past President of the Turnaround Management Association’s Northwest Chapter, which included Alberta, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon.
