Kenneth O’Brien

Kenneth O’Brien is a leader in the Investment Administration & Reporting group, which acts as an outsourced accounting department and financial reporting advisor for both publicly and privately held real estate and real estate finance companies. Mr. O’Brien has more than 25 years of industry experience.

Mr. O’Brien has significant experience in the application of the U.S. SEC rules and regulations and generally accepted accounting principles, including the investment company guide. He is well versed in income tax basis financial reporting and oversees fund administration services for real estate opportunity funds.

Mr. O’Brien has managed financial statement conversion projects for private companies going through the IPO process. He has also developed and managed the implementation of accounting and financial reporting systems for publicly traded mortgage real estate investment trusts (“REITs”), real estate equity trusts and real estate investment funds.

Mr. O’Brien has experience overseeing the preparation of quarterly and annual public filings for both mortgage REITs and equity REITs, advising clients on the accounting treatment for complex transactions. This work includes the consolidation of special-purpose and variable interest entities; loan securitization; construction accounting; accounting for debt and equity investments and derivatives; and partnership waterfall and promote calculation. He has served as the outsourced chief accounting officer and controller for several clients and has advised public companies on financial statement restatements.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. O’Brien worked at O’Reilly, Baime, Walch, Backer & Company, LLC, a certified public accounting firm that merged into The Schonbraun McCann Group — a dedicated real estate advisory firm that was acquired by FTI Consulting. At the firm, he served as principal, and his responsibilities included overseeing attest and non-attest services, such as buy-side property due diligence, cash flow modeling and federal and state business tax compliance and advisory services, for clients in many industries.
