Marie Steele-Adjognon, Ph.D.

Marie Steele-Adjognon, Ph.D., is a Senior Director in the Center for Healthcare Economics and Policy at FTI Consulting with more than five years of experience in healthcare economics and strategy consulting. With expertise in economic impact modeling, policy analysis, real-world evidence generation and health economics and outcomes research (“HEOR”), Dr. Steele-Adjognon’s work spans across the healthcare industry. In addition to being a trusted advisor to healthcare payers, government agencies and providers, she is an applied research economist specializing in economic and program evaluation and monitoring in health service sectors. Her expertise includes advanced modeling of healthcare markets, policy impact analysis, payment reform and advanced econometric modeling for healthcare and life sciences industry clients.

Dr. Steele-Adjognon leads strategic research and data analytics projects to deliver actionable insights to private and public sector clients. She has worked with clients to estimate the effects of a wide range of healthcare reform and payment innovation policies and assess healthcare provider payment policies and value-based purchasing initiatives. Dr. Steele-Adjognon has also developed microsimulation models to simulate how entities would respond to potential healthcare reforms, using economic theory and real-world data to generate coverage and financial impact estimates. She is highly skilled in providing population health analytics and has informed cross-sector stakeholders on the economic impact of various social determinants of health.

Dr. Steele-Adjognon’s experience includes analyses of the unique role hospitals play in the healthcare delivery system by providing access to specialized care. She uses advanced analytics to quantify the economic impact and community benefit hospital systems deliver and has examined the role of teaching intensity, standby specialized service capacity and patient complexity in explaining cost differences between teaching and non-teaching hospitals.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Dr. Steele-Adjognon served as the Research Director at KNG Health Consulting, where she designed and implemented impact evaluations to evaluate healthcare payments, costs, quality, utilization and outcomes of Medicare beneficiaries. She also managed the monitoring efforts for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”), the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (“CMMI”) on the All-Payer Maryland Total Cost of Care (“TCOC”) Model and the States Advancing All-Payer Health Equity Approaches and Development (“AHEAD”) Model.

Dr. Steele-Adjognon has presented at Academy Health annual meetings and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. She received a Ph.D. in applied economics from Michigan State University, as well as a B.S. in mathematics and a B.S. in financial economics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
