Michael Baumkirchner leads the Esoteric Asset-backed Securitization (“ABS”) offering within FTI Consulting’s Lender Services practice. Mr. Baumkirchner specializes in providing transaction advisory and backup manager services to clients involved in esoteric ABS transactions. He has 25 years of experience providing financial and business advice to clients involved in corporate restructurings and capital market transactions. His industry expertise includes retail and consumer products, insurance, financial institutions and oil and gas companies.
Mr. Baumkirchner’s transaction advisory services experience includes representing the interests of issuers, underwriters, guarantors and lenders. He provides up-front due diligence services and monitors existing facilities. His securitization experience includes those involving royalty and license streams, aircraft, marine cargo containers, rental cars and oil and gas wells.
As an established restructuring expert, Mr. Baumkirchner’s restructuring experience includes involvement in more than 50 troubled company situations, ranging in size from local family businesses to some of the largest bankruptcy filings ever filed. He has assisted in the management of troubled and bankrupt companies in restructuring operations, developing business and reorganization plans, formulating capital structures and complying with Bankruptcy Court reporting requirements. He has also represented the interests of creditors in restructurings and bankruptcies, assisting them in maximizing recoveries on amounts owed.
During the recent COVID-19-induced financial crisis, Mr. Baumkirchner represented the interests of the variable funding noteholders of Hertz’s rental car ABS entity HVF II. In addition, he assisted in FTI Consulting’s representation of the Unsecured Creditors’ Committee of Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc., focusing on derivative and structured product unwinds.
Prior to re-joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Baumkirchner spent five years focused on establishing and building the Back-Up Manager practice at a leading consulting firm. Before beginning his career in the consulting industry, Mr. Baumkirchner spent five years in MBIA’s structured corporate finance group, where he originated and structured secured credit backed by franchise assets, marine cargo containers, intellectual property, aviation assets and business loans and leases. Before his M.B.A., he worked as an Associate in Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein’s loan syndication department, where he focused on structuring and distributing debt in project finance, real estate and leverage finance markets. Earlier in his career, he was an analyst at Bank of America Securities’ Global Investment Bank, where he developed cash flow models for valuing various capital-intensive projects, such as power plants, telephone networks, oil fields, toll roads, and gas pipelines, in connection with the bank’s U.S. project finance practice and in support of its Latin American M&A business.
