About Tom
Tom Kench is a Director in the Technology segment specialised in information governance, privacy and security. Tom is a well-rounded data risk professional with experience advising private and government clients on privacy, data governance, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence matters.
Across these engagements, Tom has delivered a range of privacy and data governance artefacts, including privacy impact assessments, privacy maturity assessments, data processing inventories, data breach response plans and mapping obligations across jurisdictions.
Tom has presented to leadership teams and business functions on legislative, contractual and regulatory compliance from a data privacy and security lens. Additionally, he has lectured at the University of New South Wales (‘UNSW’) and Monash University on data breaches, regulator expectations, contemporary issues in the field and the role of privacy professionals.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Tom worked in commercial and insurance litigation at national and international law firms. Additionally, he has worked on pro-bono matters and research projects as part of a Royal Commission. Tom’s privacy consulting experience includes working for leading Australian brands across several sectors and government agencies on privacy, data governance, AI governance and cybersecurity engagements.
Relevant Experience:
- Led a team of five privacy professionals across privacy advisory and project engagements for multiple years at a leading national insurer
- Developed data breach response artefacts and conducted training sessions on legislative obligations and tabletop simulations for a government agency
- Created a data processing inventory and gap analysis report as the foundational piece in a multiyear privacy uplift program for a commercial real estate and property group
- Served as a cybersecurity and privacy project manager for a government agency as part of a significant multiyear reform program
- Advised private organisations on business partner, professional services, SaaS and licensing agreements, as well as the permissions and restrictions afforded by these agreements; provided insights for amendment and uplift
- Developed privacy assessment tooling, templates and guidance for a major Australian financial services company
