Mitchell DeRubis offers data-driven insights on U.S. power and natural gas markets that support strategic planning, M&A activity and expert testimony for a diverse range of energy sector participants. Mr. DeRubis developed FTI Consulting’s U.S. power modeling infrastructure and leads market simulation engagements that combine market knowledge with best-in-class methods and data.
Mr. DeRubis has more than 10 years of experience designing and executing complex analyses that combine advanced quantitative skills, deep market knowledge and proficiency in tools like PLEXOS, R and SQL. He has helped global conglomerates and joint ventures, major banks, technology companies, energy project developers, government agencies and national laboratories and trade groups make critical decisions for their organizations in the face of uncertain energy market and policy outcomes.
In addition to serving commercial and government clients, Mr. DeRubis supports expert testimony in disputes and regulatory filings across a range of energy market disputes including thermal coal, biofuels, oil and natural gas, and electric power.
Mr. DeRubis holds an M.S. in Mineral & Energy Economics from Colorado School of Mines, M.S. in Analytics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a B.A. in Economics & Political Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. DeRubis was a senior energy analyst for S&P Global Platts.

- Led power market modeling for prominent public reports, including the California Public Utilities Commission’s “Aliso Canyon I.17-02-002 Phase 3 Report”; the Los Alamos County 2022 Integrated Resource Plan; Phase 2 of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Roosevelt Project; and the Energy Futures Initiative’s “Jobs, Emissions, and Economic Growth – What the Inflation Reduction Act Means for Working Families”
- Led quantitative policy analysis on a range of topics, such as emissions leakages related to joining regional emissions markets; import tariffs on renewable power generating equipment; tax credit extensions for biofuels; and various policies related to oil and natural gas production
- Supported companies in acquiring clean energy and developing power generation assets by providing detailed market modeling and analysis, including capacity expansion planning; site selection optimization; and valuation of existing and planned generation and storage projects across key U.S. power markets
- Performed market forecasting and due diligence supporting transactions of U.S. wind, solar, thermal and battery storage projects
