Yuxiao Huang, Ph.D., has more than 10 years of experience in economic research and consulting, specializing in financial instruments, valuations, private equity, risk management and corporate finance. Dr. Huang has extensive experience assisting clients with complex litigation and business questions, resulting in favorable outcomes in many high-profile matters. He has worked with attorneys from top law firms globally in all phases of litigation, arbitration and bankruptcy proceedings. Dr. Huang’s research articles have been published in the Journal of Law and Economics, Law360 and the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance.
Dr. Huang has a track record of helping clients navigate complex litigation and business issues by applying economic theory, financial models and statistical methods. He has extensive experience working with academic and industry experts and leading teams of professionals in conducting supporting research and analyses.
Dr. Huang is experienced in estimating the cost of unwinding commodity hedge positions, evaluating whether the risk profile of an investment strategy is suitable for a relevant group of investors and estimating the value of stolen M&A opportunities. Additionally, he has evaluated investment strategies of private equity funds, estimated liquidation value and debtor recovery for multinational conglomerates, examined the reasonableness of litigation attorney fees in high-profile take-private transactions and analyzed the value of corporate voting and managerial control.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Dr. Huang was a Vice President at Analysis Group, where he conducted economic analysis in the areas of M&A, financial instruments, private equity, insurance and cryptocurrency. He has supported attorneys and experts in all phases of litigation, from discovery and the identification of experts, to assisting with the preparation of complex expert reports, preparing experts for deposition and trial testimony and assisting attorneys with cross-examination of opposing experts.
Dr. Huang holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in economics from Harvard University, as well as a B.A. in economics and mathematics-statistics from Columbia University.
Relevant Experience:
- Estimated a private equity fund’s expected profit from a portfolio company in the home health and hospice industry that follows a buy-and-build strategy
- Assessed the liquidation value of Steinhoff, a large international conglomerate, by thoroughly analyzing its holding structure and value, including assets and liabilities at more than a dozen subsidiaries and business units
- Evaluated how a Canadian bank had managed its exposure to the U.S. subprime mortgage market during the financial crisis; assisted an industry expert to opine on whether the bank’s risk management practice was consistent with or exceeded industry standard at the time
- Evaluated the risk profile of a trading strategy that involved short-selling Government of Canada bonds and investing in corporate preferred shares; assessed whether the strategy suited the stated risk preference of the plaintiff investors
- Estimated the deal closure probability of a disputed pending M&A transaction and the standalone value of the target company using option pricing models
- Analyzed the trading behaviors of a security cross-listed in two stock exchanges; assisted the expert to opine on whether the security was traded in one market or two distinct markets
- Utilized a sampling design to evaluate alleged upcoding by a healthcare service provider in an insurance fraud case; extrapolated the review results from the sample to all at-issue insurance claims to illustrate that there was no evidence of systemic upcoding
- Estimated the reasonable price for the voluntary termination of an over-the-counter commodity forward contract, including the market impact of unwinding the associated futures’ hedge positions
- Conducted analyses related to class certification, market efficiency and loss causation in connection with securities class actions
- Estimated security class action damages using a trading model and provided consulting support for settlement discussions
- Assessed the alleged damages incurred by original bondholders in the restructuring of bonds issued by a large state-owned enterprise (“SOE”)
- Evaluated the terms of the merger of two media companies with a controlling shareholder in a parallel litigation where shareholders of both companies alleged the merger to be unfair
- Assessed the impact and economic value of corporate governance reforms undertaken by a large utility company
- Assessed the change in standalone value of a target company following a merger announcement due to adverse market and industry conditions; supported the expert to opine on whether the change in target company value as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic should be considered a material adverse effect (“MAE”) based on the merger agreement
- Analyzed whether the strengthening of appraisal rights in Delaware benefited target shareholders through higher premium and lower merger arbitrage spread
- Conducted valuation of a joint venture in the media industry with business segments in linear TV, on-demand streaming and digital advertising
- Analyzed changes to a company’s financial projections over time and examined the resulting impact on its valuation
- Analyzed multiple relational datasets of accounts and trading records maintained by a cryptocurrency company accused of running a Ponzi scheme in a securities fraud class action
- Identified numerous class certification issues arising from the incompleteness and anonymity of an account and trading data
