Oxfam Hong Kong sought to enhance its local crisis readiness by preparing its teams to manage potential issues. FTI Consulting was engaged on a pro bono basis to review and strengthen the organization’s Crisis Communications Guidelines, ensuring they are aligned with global best practices and fit for Oxfam’s high-profile, public-facing role.
Our Impact
- An updated, industry-benchmarked and crisis-ready communications protocol gave Oxfam Hong Kong a practical and actionable framework for use across the organization.
- Cross-functional teams were equipped with practical communications and escalation protocols, strengthening their ability to coordinate under pressure, manage stakeholder communications and reduce the risk of miscommunication, delays and reputational harm during fast-moving situations.
- The engagement meaningfully enhanced Oxfam Hong Kong’s capacity to uphold transparency and protect community trust, particularly in situations involving public scrutiny.
Our Role
- FTI Consulting conducted an extensive review of Oxfam Hong Kong’s existing crisis communications guidelines, benchmarking them against global best practices while ensuring they remained practical for the organization’s reporting lines and operating context.
- Our crisis communications experts designed and hosted a Crisis Management and Issues Response Workshop, bringing together more than 40 Oxfam colleagues from Hong Kong and Macau.
- We facilitated realistic crisis scenario exercises that enabled cross-functional teams to apply crisis management principles from the training, test their response thinking and build confidence as they formulated crisis communications responses.
- We also provided targeted guidance on stakeholder communications during crises, including how to address concerns, navigate difficult conversations, block and bridge, and maintain transparency under pressure.
