FTI Consulting was engaged by external legal counsel to investigate potential policy violations in executive travel and expense (“T&E”) reimbursements spanning multiple global regions, including North America, Europe and Asia. Prompted by board-level concerns over irregularities tied to high-volume international travel, the review focused on assessing the accuracy, legitimacy and compliance of claims submitted by senior leadership over a two-year period. Collaborating closely with internal audit and HR, FTI Consulting delivered an independent, cross-jurisdictional analysis designed to uncover misuse, strengthen internal controls and restore organizational confidence in T&E practices.
Our Impact
- FTI Consulting uncovered several issues in the company’s expense practices, including duplicate claims, personal charges disguised as business expenses and luxury travel lacking proper justification.
- The investigation provided the Board with clear, actionable findings that supported internal remediation efforts and restored leadership confidence in financial oversight.
- FTI Consulting’s recommendations strengthened the company’s global compliance procedures through the implementation of enhanced tools and processes, including automated policy checks and centralized approval workflows, designed to minimize the risk of future misuse.
- The implementation of these stronger controls will ultimately improve transparency, accountability and cost efficiency across the company’s global operations.
Our Role
- FTI Consulting conducted a comprehensive analysis of T&E submissions across multiple regions by extracting and reviewing data from the client’s expense management system.
- Using targeted sampling and advanced data analytics, we identified and evaluated high-risk transactions and spending anomalies.
- Our experts conducted interviews with key stakeholders and reviewed T&E policies against local regulations and industry standards.
