How do you swiftly verify and manage thousands of compensation claims for an organization in crisis across five states?

In response to a request from Pope Francis, the Archdiocese of New York and other Catholic Church dioceses initiated a series of independent compensation programs to assist survivors of instances of sexual abuse of minors by clergy.

The Law Offices of Kenneth R. Feinberg served as Administrator to various dioceses and investigated, administrated and mediated individual claims.

FTI Consulting was retained to assist the Administrator in the intake, validation and communications of the compensation programs, for 23 dioceses across five states.

Data management and survivor communication

FTI Consulting designed and maintained various survivor service data portals for the registration and tracking of survivor details and claim status.
Our experts operated a daily survivor’s call center for each diocesan program across multiple time zones.
The team performed survivors’ claimant validation screening and periodic investigations of registrants’ backgrounds.
FTI Consulting produced all necessary program-related materials to assist survivors, including claimant communications. We mailed and tracked all survivors’ claimant communications and performed skip tracing activities for undeliverable mail.

Utah residents faced a significant rise in electricity prices when Rocky Mountain Power (“RMP”) filed a General Rate Case (“GRC”) with the Public Service Commission of Utah seeking a $331.5 million rate increase. The company cited rapidly rising costs, including an $82.0 million increase for their liability insurance. The Utah Division of Public Utilities (“the Division”) engaged FTI Consulting as an independent advisor to assess the appropriate level of excess liability insurance costs that should be passed on to Utah ratepayers.

Driving Maximum Creditor Recovery in the FTX Bankruptcy

In 2022, FTX, once the third-largest crypto exchange, and Alameda, a related crypto trading firm, suffered a spike in customer withdrawals amidst allegations of fraud, leaving many customers unable to access their assets.Soon after, when FTX and Alameda filed for bankruptcy, its customers became creditors, while billions of dollars in cryptocurrency assets remained with the exchange and were subject to market risks. FTI Consulting’s experts advised the Unsecured Creditor Committee (“UCC”) on the optimal strategy to monetize the vast cryptocurrency holdings to ensure maximum recovery. Drawing on the full strength of FTI Consulting, we helped enhance asset values, including designing a digital asset monetization strategy; optimized creditor recoveries, including developing a detailed claims recovery model; and communicated with creditor and customer stakeholders.In 2025 the American Bankruptcy Institute recognized the work with FTX – including FTI Consulting’s contribution as Financial Advisor to the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors – as “International Matter of the Year.”

Recovering $2.7 Billion for 18,000 Victims in Stanford Ponzi Scheme

Two months after the arrest of Bernie Madoff, the SEC raided the offices of Stanford International Bank, which uncovered a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that defrauded more than 18,000 investors.A Receiver was appointed and represented by legal counsel. FTI Consulting was engaged as the Receiver’s primary consultant to support recovery efforts, including identifying and analyzing a complex network of assets, cash flows, personnel and underlying electronic data systems.

Recovering $460 Million from a PFI Ponzi Scheme

FTI Consulting was retained by counsel as the forensic accounting experts for the various creditors of PFI to thoroughly investigate the allegations made by the SEC and DOJ that PFI had been run as a Ponzi-like scheme for more than 30 years. After reconstructing the company’s records and conducting a detailed forensic accounting investigation into its financial activity (culminating in a detailed declaration to the Bankruptcy Court of its findings), FTI Consulting was able to uncover evidence that PFI was being operated as a Ponzi scheme from at least January 1, 2007.After the Court’s ruling, FTI Consulting was asked to manage PFI through the subsequent Chapter 11 bankruptcy, managing and rehabilitating properties and facilitating the sale of assets. This ultimately resulted in more than $460 million in gross sales and nearly 70% recovery of invested funds for the victims.

Inside the American Apparel Investigation

When the iconic U.S. fashion company American Apparel publicly suspended its founding CEO amid persistent allegations of misconduct, FTI Consulting was engaged by the independent board of directors and legal counsel Jones Day to conduct a thorough, firm-wide forensic investigation into the allegations.Less than 12 hours after being selected, FTI Consulting had experts on-site and rapidly assembled a team of more than 60 forensic accounting, technology and corporate finance experts. Over an intense three-month period, our team worked under intense media scrutiny from every major news outlet across the globe. The company presented its findings to the board and to various governmental agencies, supporting the board’s decision to terminate the CEO for cause.FTI Consulting’s investigation uncovered widespread issues, including indicia of sexual harassment and workplace discrimination, later highlighted in the 2025 Netflix docu-series, “Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel.” ¹
