Ian Smith is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in London. Mr. Smith is in the Technology segment and heads the Computer Forensics practice in EMEA.
Mr. Smith joined FTI Consulting in 2008, moving from the Digital Forensics Group of HM Revenue & Customs, bringing with him nine years of experience of forensic data acquisition technologies; data identification, processing and cleansing; investigator training and support; and presentation of evidence in court.
Mr. Smith has extensive experience in the planning and execution of forensic data collections in the UK and internationally both under invitation and under the provision of court issued warrants. This has included acquisition of data from large corporations, accountancy practices, law firms, barrister’s chambers and domestic residences.
Mr. Smith has organised multi-agency operations, providing training, guidance and briefings to specialist vendors, investigators and law enforcement personnel to ensure that uniform procedures have been implemented and the evidential probity of captured data maintained at all stages. This has incorporated procedures for data capture, through data extraction, analysis and production; and associated chain of custody protocols.
Mr. Smith is experienced in managing the workflow relating to the processing and analysis of data emanating from numerous individuals and locations; and subsequently supporting investigation team(s) to plan delivery schedules. He has provided one-to-one and one-to-many training sessions on all aspect of forensic IT processing and review. Ian has also been an invited visiting lecturer at the Royal Military College of Science where he has delivered lectures and practical exercises to students over a period of 6 years attending the MSc Forensic Computing from law enforcement agencies and private companies.
Examples of Mr. Smith’s experience:
- Management of a large data collection, processing and review matter for a large international financial institution based in Europe in relation to a litigation valued at over $500m. The project included the defensible identification, collection and review of several terabytes of data, at the client’s premises in Europe, in a contentious litigation involving multiple jurisdictions and data from diverse systems over a 15-year period of interest.
- Management of electronic evidence recovery for a large search and seizure operation spanning over 400 locations across the UK involving 300 investigators. Responsible for directing 12 electronic evidence specialists from 5 agencies, law-enforcement and commercial, over the course of the four day operation. Electronic evidence briefing delivered to 300 search team members and 100 team leaders.
