Michael Bui is a Managing Director in the Turnaround & Restructuring practice. He has more than 12 years of corporate recovery, corporate finance and financial advisory experience. His industry experience includes engineering and construction, oilfield services, exploration and production, power and other industrial sectors.
Mr. Bui’s experience includes forecast and liquidity assessments, business plan development and analyses, collateral evaluations and financial modeling. He has also advised clients on covenant negotiations, bankruptcy preparation, acquisitions and market assessment. Mr. Bui has represented private and public companies, as well as lenders.
Most recently, Mr. Bui was financial advisor to the ad-hoc group of lenders of an international offshore drilling contractor, advising the lenders on the non-consensual, out-of-court take-over and carve-out from the borrower’s parent company. Prior to that, Mr. Bui was financial advisor ExGen Texas Power, a subsidiary of Exelon Corp. and owner of five natural gas power plants during its bankruptcy and sales process. Mr. Bui also served as Interim Chief Financial Officer of Juniper GTL LLC, an energy project development company, guiding the company through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy with a near full recovery for all secured creditors.
Other notable engagements include Pacific Drilling S.A., Willbros Group, Inc., RockPile Energy Services, a private engineering and fabrication company, a publicly traded mid-continent exploration and production (“E&P”) company, a publicly traded Louisiana and Texas focused E&P company, a publicly-traded downhole tools and chemicals company, Big West Oil, and several other confidential matters.
Prior to rejoining FTI Consulting, Mr. Bui was a Senior Manager of Project Controls and Business Management with KBR’s Saudi Arabian Joint Venture. The joint venture provided engineering services to the oil and gas and infrastructure industry. In this role, he was responsible for business management matters, including financial planning and analysis, project controls (cost, planning and estimating) and major pursuit analysis. Mr. Bui began his professional career at KBR, where his responsibilities included providing analytical support for business acquisitions, investor relations and market research. Mr. Bui played integral roles in KBR's $511 million initial public offering and subsequent split-off of Halliburton.
Mr. Bui holds a B.B.A. in finance from the University of Houston and an M.B.A. from Houston Baptist University. He is a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor. Mr. Bui is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Houston Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association.
Mr. Bui has been recognized numerous times by industry awards for his exceptional work. In 2018, his team received the Turnaround of the Year Awards for their work with both restructuring ExGen Texas Power and the divestment of Handley Power to Exelon by the M&A Advisor and the Mid-Market Restructuring Deal of the Year by the Global M&A Network. In 2017, Mr. Bui was named to the 8th Annual M&A Advisor's Emerging Leader list, won Energy Deal of the Year from the M&A Advisor Turnaround Awards and Transaction of the Year for his team's work on Juniper GTL by the Turnaround Management Association.
