Michael Bui is a Managing Director in the Turnaround & Restructuring practice. He has more than 12 years of corporate recovery, corporate finance and financial advisory experience, including in the engineering and construction, oilfield services, exploration and production, power and other industrial sectors.
Mr. Bui’s experience includes forecast and liquidity assessments, business plan development and analyses, collateral evaluations and financial modeling. He also has advised clients on covenant negotiations, bankruptcy preparation, acquisitions and market assessment. Mr. Bui has represented private and public companies, as well as lenders.
Most recently, Mr. Bui was financial advisor ExGen Texas Power, a subsidiary of Exelon Corp. and owner of five natural gas power plants. Other recent roles include serving as financial advisor to a Texas-based private construction company and an international shipping company, advising the companies and its board of directors on liquidity assessment and strategic alternatives. Mr. Bui also served as Interim Chief Financial Officer of Juniper GTL LLC, an energy project development company, guiding the company through a highly successful Chapter 11 bankruptcy with a near full recovery for all lien creditors.
Other notable engagements include Pacific Drilling S.A., Willbros Group, Inc., RockPile Energy, a private engineering and fabrication company, a publicly traded mid-continent exploration and production (“E&P”) company, a publicly traded Louisiana and Texas focused E&P company, a publicly-traded downhole tools and chemicals company, Big West Oil, Keystone Automotive Operations and several other confidential matters.
Prior to rejoining FTI Consulting, Mr. Bui was a Senior Manager of Project Controls and Business Management with KBR’s Saudi Arabian Joint Venture. The joint venture provided engineering services to the oil and gas and infrastructure industry. In this role, he was responsible for business management matters, including financial planning and analysis, project controls (cost, planning and estimating) and major pursuit analysis. Mr. Bui began his professional career at KBR, where his responsibilities included providing analytical support for business acquisitions, investor relations and market research. Mr. Bui played integral roles in KBR's $511 million initial public offering and subsequent split-off of Halliburton.
Mr. Bui holds a B.B.A. in finance from the University of Houston and an M.B.A. from Houston Baptist University. He is a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor. Mr. Bui is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Houston Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association.
Mr. Bui received the 8th Annual M&A Advisor’s Emerging Leader Award for his notable work . In 2017, he received the M&A Advisor’s Energy Deal of the Year (under $100 million) Award and was named an Emerging Leader in the Service Professional category. Mr. Bui was also recognized by the Turnaround Management Association’s Transaction of the Year Award for Juniper GTL. In 2018, he was recognized by The Global M&A Network for Deal of the Year (Restructuring Mid Market) and by the M&A Advisor for his work on the restructuring of ExGen Texas Power and divestment of Handley Power to Exelon.
