FTI Consulting Expands Strategic Communications Segment’s Energy & Natural Resources Capabilities in the Americas
Shannon Maher Bañaga Joins Ben Springer as Firm Makes Key Investments in Utilities, Power and Renewable Sectors
Washington, D.C., Dec. 19, 2019 — FTI Consulting, Inc. (NYSE: FCN) today announced the appointment of Shannon Maher Bañaga as a Managing Director in the Strategic Communications segment, furthering enhancing the firm’s public affairs and issues management capabilities in the Energy & Natural Resources sector.
A widely recognized expert and seasoned practitioner in environmental and energy policy and related regulatory matters, the addition of Ms. Bañaga marks the firm’s latest move to expand this market-leading team. She will be based in Washington, D.C.
“It’s become popular for firms to say they prioritize genuine issue expertise when it comes to helping clients navigate difficult strategic challenges,” said Chris Tucker, global Leader of Energy & Natural Resources for the Strategic Communications segment at FTI Consulting. “For us, it’s an obsession — and the foundation upon which this entire practice was and continues to be built. We couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to add someone of Shannon’s obvious talent and expertise to our growing team.”
Ms. Bañaga joins FTI Consulting from TECO Energy, where she served as Director of Federal Affairs since 2014. Ms. Bañaga also worked as Senior Manager of Public Policy and Governmental Affairs for the Public Service Enterprise Group, where she engaged with lawmakers on federal policies concerning the environment. She has experience with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”), first as an enforcement attorney investigating violations of federal law and later as the Senior Energy Associate for Husch Blackwell LLP, representing energy companies and state commissions in proceedings before the FERC and other federal agencies. Ms. Bañaga also has experience working on environmental and nuclear matters at the U.S. Department of Energy.
This appointment is one of a number strategic hires the firm has recently made to expand its North American Energy & Natural Resources industry team. Among them is Ben Springer, who previously handled the climate portfolio for the British government from its embassy in Washington, D.C., and worked on renewables policy for the French utility EDF prior to joining the Strategic Communications segment this past summer.
“I’m excited to join FTI Consulting’s talented team, which is known for their deep subject-matter expertise and rigorous approach to addressing the most complex communications challenges that exist today,” said Ms. Bañaga. “The power and utilities sector is undergoing a radical transformation amid new technologies, increased regulatory oversight and changing consumer preferences. Companies in this space will need this kind of expert team with hands-on experience and an established track record to help them navigate this ever-evolving terrain.”
Chris LeWand, Global Head of Power & Utilities at FTI Consulting, added, “I am thrilled to have Shannon join FTI Consulting, as she adds a unique skill set that will be leveraged across a variety of interrelated industries and further expands the breadth of our energy capabilities. We are now even better positioned to help our clients, whether it be entering new markets, navigating major events, optimizing their businesses or dealing with the many challenges confronting them in today’s challenging environment.”
