Alistair Winning

Alistair Winning is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in London. He is a member of the European Tax Advisory group. Mr. Winning has over 20 years of experience advising businesses in respect to indirect tax issues. While specializing in real estate, Mr. Winning also advises a wide range of industries, including financial services, retail, hospitality, transport, life sciences, electronic services, not for profit and the public sector.

Mr. Winning provides advice on structuring transactions in a VAT- efficient manner, maximizing recovery of VAT and minimizing the incursion of irrecoverable VAT, together with the VAT compliance implications of international supply chains.

Since joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Winning has assisted in the recovery of nearly £650,000 of VAT on transaction costs incurred in the acquisition of a UK housebuilder. Mr. Winning also undertook the VAT part of the vendor due diligence for the housebuilder and negotiated a special method for determining VAT recovery on costs, saving the housebuilder an additional £250,000. Mr. Winning has also assisted a UK banking group claim about £550,000 of VAT on purchases over a three year period and put in place processes enabling further annual savings of nearly £250,000 for the bank.

Mr. Winning also provides advice to businesses on maximizing VAT cash-flow and has advised a number of real estate businesses on the implementation of systems to ensure VAT is only accounted for, if and after that VAT has been received from customers.

In the real estate sector, Mr. Winning has provided advice to ensure a VAT cost of nearly £120 million will not arise on the operation of a new £600 million medical research building in London.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Winning was a member of the real estate, government and healthcare group at KPMG in London, where he provided indirect tax advice on the legacy issues on the 2012 London Olympics and in relation to the renationalization of the East Coast railway line, which links London with Edinburgh.

Mr. Winning holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Warwick.
