Brian Carl is a Senior Managing Director and leads the Chicago office’s Data & Analytics team within FTI Consulting’s Forensic & Litigation Consulting segment. For nearly 25 years, Mr. Carl has served clients by providing financial, litigation and business consulting services with a focus on event-driven situations. He specializes in providing data and analytical services in connection with disputes, investigations, insurance claims, risk transfers, restructuring and performance improvement matters.
Mr. Carl has experience performing complex quantitative analyses, and collecting, analyzing and producing financial, transactional, operational and claims data from disparate sources to develop relevant insights. He has managed the design and development of rigorous financial models, analytical frameworks, dynamic visualizations and data management tools to reveal truths, inform stakeholders and advise decision-makers in the face of uncertainty.
Mr. Carl also specializes in assisting companies and counsel evaluate and resolve complex data-intensive claims and disputes. He has assisted clients quantify and assess the financial impact of asbestos, pollution, human health hazards (e.g., cosmetic talc, lead-based paint, PFAS, benzene), medical devices, pharmaceuticals (e.g., prescription opioids) and other product liability and environmental claims. He has recovered costs from insurers through buyouts, commutations and coverage-in-place agreements, and provided support to attorneys in mediation, arbitration and litigation. He has experience calculating lost profits and extra expense associated with business interruption and property damage claims. He has prepared, presented and resolved dozens of major claims for clients.
Mr. Carl has provided expert testimony in depositions, submitted expert reports in litigation and arbitration, supported testifying experts and attorneys in disputes and consulted on a range of matters including the collection, management, reconciliation and analysis of data from information systems; the development of claim allocation models under various legal theories; ascertainability of classes; forensic accounting; reconstruction and valuation of insurance assets; historical loss assessments; forecasting and valuation of future liabilities; probabilistic risk analyses; litigation risk assessments with counsel; management of multi-party settlement proceedings; quantitative efforts to develop robust demand and target recovery ranges, and development of negotiated settlement strategies with counsel to mitigate risk and optimize value.
Mr. Carl has served clients in the Advertising, Chemical, e-Commerce, Financial Services, FinTech, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Medical Equipment, Oil & Gas, Pharmacy, Pulp & Paper, Rental & Leasing and Utilities industries. Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Carl was a Director in the Claims, Disputes and Investigations practice at The Claro Group. Before that, Mr. Carl was a Manager in the Global Insurance Claims practice at LECG and was a Senior Consultant with Arthur Andersen in the Financial Advisory Services practice.
