Erasmus Theron

Erasmus Theron is a Managing Director at FTI Consulting based in Cape Town. Erasmus works in the Business Transformation team providing and implementing global trade solutions, including operating models and support processes, supply chain, procurement, benefits analysis, model building and project management. He has more than 20 years of industry expertise in customs and excise-related consulting and dispute advisory services.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Erasmus led one of the Big Four consulting firms' South African Customs and Global Trade Practice and has considerable experience in industries impacted by customs and excise legislation, both locally and within Africa, ranging from alcoholic beverages, tobacco and other consumer goods.

Throughout his career, Erasmus has consulted manufacturers in the interpretation and application of Southern African customs and excise-related. He has assisted clients on matters ranging from customs and excise strategy to the preparation and submission of tax and legislative proposals to the South African Revenue Service and the National Treasury of South Africa. Erasmus has been involved in developing customs and excise-related business process analysis offerings that manage duty and trade regulatory requirements from source to general ledger level for various multinationals. These include Enterprise Resource Planning platform optimization to provide for all duty-related triggers and developing key control frameworks, simplifying the external audit and legal compliance of customs and excise-related activities.

Erasmus has conducted several customs-related process efficiency reviews at multinationals to manage the risks associated with the import and subsequent distribution and export of goods ranging from supplier reviews to customs valuation and tariff classification assistance. He has also assisted various clients with responses to assessments raised by revenue authorities ranging from managing the dispute process to settlement and litigation support services.

Erasmus holds a B.L.C., L.L.B., (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria and is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and was previously a practising Advocate and member of the Pretoria Bar. He frequently lectures customs and excise modules to postgraduate students at the University of Stellenbosch.
